Accelerator pedal jumping ?!?!?!

Sup ya'll ... I drive a 97 2.2 with approx 150k and normally the car runs like a champ, regular oil changes, always checking the tire pressure and have owned it since 96k, with no major work needing to be done except the emissions recall. About a week ago the check engine light came on, but I didn't notice anything about the way she drives. Two days ago the light started flashing at me and while in 4th gear 3kRPMs the pedal felt like it was jumping and it almost seemed as thought my passenger tire was going flat, that wasn't the case ... the tire is fine ... but then I started to notice that in ANY gear around 3k RPMs it is jumpy, I feel it in the pedal and hear a slight thud or thumping sound. I can't do anything until Friday, but I just wanted to see if anybody has run into this problem !? If so, what kind of costs am I potentially looking at ?? I asked a friend who has a friend who is a mechanic and it was suggested to me that it could be the CV shaft or a bad bearing in the trans-axel ... does this sound right to anybody ?? Any help would be appreciated.

Peace - (frustrated) Kaaos
