Your Girlfriend is in my
I would say its obviously Fuel related. Have you had your spark plugs changed? If you take them out, maybe you can see your old ones that can tell you whats been going on in there. For it showing a lean code would mean More Oxygen, Less Fuel.

Bagel Bomber
I'll bump this up top: My parents 97 2.2 just came back with two CEL's one is P0171 and the other is the imfamous P0401
Any suggestions on the P0171? Just happened recently after the car sat for a long time (winter). I'm thinking i'm going to clear the codes and address the EGR and see if the P0171 was just a fluke.
Could the two be related?

I tore apart the intake manifold yesterday and removed the EGR valve and cleaned it. CEL has not come back on yet. The EGR valve was not that dirty, nor was the runner in the manifold so I suspect it will come back on. I have been noticing a weird gas/cat smell. Maybe I am just getting jumpy!
O2 sensor next?

Was it really hot and humid when you threw the codes?

I replaced the fuel pressure regulator, CEL remained on. I did take off the intake manifold, and sprayed compressed air into the EGR valve. EGR wasn't reallly clogged so I put everything back together. I few days later the CEL went away, hasn't come on in about 2-3 weeks. Put a can of sea foam in the gas tank for good measure.

Yes, it was very hot yesterday when the code threw. (about 96 degrees)
perhaps ill clean the EGR valve, the car has 122k miles on it now and ive never cleaned that part.

I would say clean it out. Pretty easy to take apart and put back together, took me about two hours working slowly. I would say just wait a while before throwing any money at it. Mine just went away, hopefully yours does too.

Just incase anyone else runs into this problem, I figured it would be nice to post my solution.
First, I changed the fuel filter, seafoamed the car, and reset the computer. It still ran very poorly.
Next, I pulled to primary O2 sensor and changed it. The car has run perfect since.
Turns out the O2 sensor was the issue.
