97 2.2 Auto Front End Whining??

Has anyone had a similar problem? I only hear it when the car is moving so I don't believe it's the alternator. It becomes noticeable at about 40MPH and the "frequency" of the noise gets higher as I speed up. It almost sounds like a tire whine but I don't see any abnormal tire wear or cupping. I'm concerned it might be bearings or even worse....the dreaded transmission. Any help or suggestions would be great.

Thanks, Dan

It doesn't sound like an ignition hum. In fact it seems independent of the engine RPM. I was rolling along about 55 down hill and shifted to neutral, as the engine idled down the whinning noise remained constant. It sounds mechanical.

Has anyone had any experience with front bearings? How could I check to see if they are going bad?

do you normally throw your auto from 55 downhill into Neuteral? If so, poor thing's already

Check the belts. Make sure there's no wear/tearing.

No, if he lets it into neutral at 55, it doesn't hurt, but if he tries to put it back into drive, now that might hurt. The whine is probably tire whine. I have brand new Firestones, and they whine... But if it is not the tires, you probably got a noisy diferential. Hondas/Acuras are known for having loud transaxel mechanisms.

Good luck.

i had a problem very similar to that..ppl told me it was because my brake pads were worn but that didnt make sense to me because it sounded like it was coming from the engine. so i changed the brake pads anyways (they were worn) and havent heard the noise since =)

I don't normally do the 55 to neutral thing. I just wanted to make sure the sound was not coming from the engine, belts or alternator.

I hope it's only the brake pads and not the differential. I've only noticed this noise over the last couple of weeks. Other than the frequncy lowering, I don't notice any change in the sound when I apply the brakes. Is the noisy differential an indication of a problem or just annoying?
