Don't have hard starting problems, car feels more powerful now than when I bought it. On the other hand as I said before my Mom's newer Honda only has 87 run thru it and gets downright sluggish before I give it its regular 2-3k fuel injector cleaning. You even have to pump the throttle to get it to start before they are cleaned. This practical real world experience with real cars seems to refute what you all are saying. Octane pertains to burning (like in the cylinder) not to spraying (as in the fuel injectors). Unrefined petrochemical filth leads to deposits, not a higher flashpoint.
The inherent properties of gasoline and its relationship to octane ratings explains it. An octane of 87 detonates quicker than an octane of 93. With a compression of 8.8:1 as someone stated earlier, you would not burn 93 octane efficiently with the map and timing. 93 octane would remain unburned and turn into gum and build up, while 87 octane would come closer to complete combustion leaving less deposits than unburned fuel. Beyond the scientifics of it all...Regardless if the fuel is "dirty" as you say, cause its not clear, if combustion is efficient, fuel is less likely to build up on the injector's nozzle like it would w/ inefficient combustion caused by too high of an octane. Additionally, the mainstreaming of FI over carbs in the mid 80's and more recently the complication of fuel systems, you will find that most if not all fuels have detergent additives to prevent build up on the valves, combustion chambers, and most importantly the injectors(given complete combustion), and also due to emissions concerns.

Secondly, if you want real world experience with real cars, evidence enough is my F22 2.2 that has ran on 87 octane its whole life, being 130k miles, neglected in terms of fuel injector cleaning. Without exaggeration, the car has had injector treatment less than 5 times. The car runs as strong as it ever has with that mileage Need more? Another F22 that we had for 80k miles, never had fuel treatment once and ran strong until we got rid of it. Need evidence from a newer Honda, currently also have a j30 AV6 that has ran on 87 since its first fill up, 55k miles and no performance decrease, nor has it ever had fuel treatment. I could go through more car history if you want, like another 2.2 that went 140k miles.....but it would get boring very quick. Not to be brash, but I'd say my practical real world experience trumps your practical real world experience.
