4 Low Beam conversion
4 Low Beam conversion
what makes the outter bulbs high beams? is it the bulb itself (being 9005) or is it the tilt of the socket in the housing? i want to turn the outter bulbs into low beams to run all 4 bulbsas low beams at the same time and am wondering if i just need to change the sockets to 9006, or if the tilt of the bulb is a factor.
outer bulb high beam?
on mine, inner bulbs are DRLs(daytime running lights, cuz i'm canada i need them)there is less power given to them when they are on all the time tho as they just need to be on not to actually produce a lot of light onto the road, and when i switch to highbeams they are given full power, so the maximum wattage of the bulb. but the outside ones are the ones you use at night so they are your low beams
i'm pretty sure someone has done this, to run both sets of headlight bulbs at a time, i will try and find the thread, it's something bout a "DRL mod" i believe

no dice, tried searching and couldn't find anything really, i'm pretty sure i've seen a pic of a cl on here with both headlights running at the same time as a part of a mod... not positive tho.. and i haven't been here that long either so i haven't seen that many posts/threads about this kind of thing
i'm sure someone else on here has some sort of info on this type of thing, or just a good memory with a skill for searching (blackack)

The difference between low beams and high beams, is that low beams have painted tips to prevent glare and have a reflector over the bulb that blocks direct output, the high beams have no coating on the bulbs and aren't covered at all. The high beams are also on the inside most parts of the headlights on each side of the grille

check what klepto did, he took the parking lights on the outside and modded them to fit in the housing where the "highbeams" go and presto! trying searching a bit more, i know i've seen it somewhere on here, but perhaps i could be wrong because i've seen them up close and personal..the only thing is that you lose the function of having the parking lights on the outer corners of the headlights..
i just think it would look better driving down the road at night with all 4 sections of the headlights lit up, instead of the inners dark, looks like something is missing. I just happened to look at my lights the other night and the idea came into mind.
I was just messing with my old 9006 bulbs to see if they would fit into the high beam socket and it seems that the diamater of the base of the 9006 bulb is wider than the that of the 9005 so in order to get it to even fit into the housing that hole would need to be boared (sp?) out. I cut the little tab inside the socket and altered the 3 outter ones but im still convinced its the diamater of the base thats stopping it from going in. Question, do you think the painted tip of the 9006 bulb without having the cover inside the housing would be enough to lower the light output not to blind people?

I dunno, the purpose of the reflector is to not blind people, even with the painted tip, you will still be driving around with your high beams on at all times, if you want it for looks, I'd get some spare 194/168 bulb harnesses and replace your highbeams or move the outer corners in, I wouldn't put headlight bulbs in to run your highs at all times, just my opinion
i wont be running high beams all the time. i want to convert the stock high beams to low beams, have the same light output and bulb temp as the original low beams which would double my current light output without blinding anyone, and get rid of that dark section in the headlights...dual constant HIDs!!

My point is, especially if you're trying to run dual hid's that without that reflector around the bulb, you will be driving around with your high beams on all the time, regardless if there are 9005 or 9006 bulbs, and note that 9006 hid bulbs don't have the painted coating either.
got it, that was what i was asking a couple posts up.. i can try to open my old headlights, get the bulb reflector covers out and fabricate them to fit in the high beams of my new headlights (hopefully without making them look like shit)..seems like a lot of work but im fuckin bored!!
seems like a lot of work to have some extra lights on that are not highbeams, i'd say custom fit some foglights to your car and put HIDs in that, that way you can turn them on/off whenever you want, and still retain your highbeams
and back on topic........but even if you put the reflector in and painted tip bulbs, aren't the highbeam/DRL lights angled higher than the lowbeams, or the housings are set that way to reflect the light higher? cuz on mine there seems to be very little light that hits the ground infront of the car, but instead only hits objects above the ground

if the spring didn't break the halogen bulbs i'm pretty sure it would break the xenon bulbs, cuz they are not round like the halogens, innovative tho, now go up to a big wall and turn on your lowbeams, take a pic, note the cutoff line, turn on highbeams, take a pic and compare cutoff lines to see if there is light from the highbeams that go above the light from the cutoff of the lowbeams
dylan....my opinion is that it can't be done as the angle of the reflector is such that it points a little bit straighter than the low beams.....i.e you will need to set the low beam a little lower in order for you to force the high beam lower...the high beam setting is at a proportional angle to the low beam.....so even if you manage to fit in the bulb and what not you will still be blinding the on coming traffic......well if you don't mind your low beam lower then before you butcher the head lamps try setting the low beam really really at a lower setting and see how the high beam behaves........also what blackack said might hold water as to the reflector shield and blinding the oncoming traffic.....
I'm thinking I would be cursing you out if you came at me with 4 HIDs. I can't stand cars with obviously too much light output. It's damn near more dangerous than you not having enough light. When traffic coming at you are blinded they might make mistakes. Not saying yours would definitely be like that, but it sounds like it.

i completely removed my low beams and ran just highs for 3 months almost. only got flashed a few times( 1 cop haha). nothing too bad. but that could also be because my car is pretty raked, face down ass up!, just like my girls yo!
