Acura testing TSX with CVT transmission

I was reading this article and came accross this

While competitor CVTs have a "rubber band" feeling similar to a slipping clutch under acceleration, the Honda system I drove at Motegi, in an Acura TSX test mule with the new i-VTEC 2.4, felt more like a traditional torque converter automatic, free of the high-pitch whine usually associated with CVTs.
Honda is expanding CVT on its cars. Will replace most subcompact and small cars' 5AT with it.

Pyro, I think the point of this that the technology is being used in the TSX.

Well he was telling us that yeah, that shit is in a TSX running around Japan somewhere.

This is very interesting to me, as it sparks a hope that the TSX will live on

Honda had better do something about it's horrible transmissions at the moment. I would NEVER buy any Honda product with an Auto. Everyone I know who has one, literally everyone, has had their auto trans fail. Some it's at 160,000 (04 Accord v6), others (just recently mind you) 2007 Accord with all of 64,000 miles on it, had to literally fight to get Honda to good will it. She had to pay 1,300.00. Two friends with TL's (husband and wife) both had theirs go. Although in Acura's defense they covered both of their cars and they were both out of warranty... It's an epidemic.

Funny I know a lot of people with Hondas and Acuras, dozens actually. None of them have ever had an automatic go out on them. I've put a lot of miles on mine, no issues.

If it's a GOOD CVT, I wouldn't care. They're much better than they used to be and these new ones Honda is debuting are light-years ahead of the current design.

The TSX may live on as the Accord in the rest of the world. The question is will it live on in North America as the TSX.

The other scenario is that Honda will globalize their models much like what Ford is doing right now with the Focus and Escape. The TSX would probably get stripped of its luxury items and just be sold as an Accord with the luxury items as option packages.

I used to love CVTs when i first saw them on a highlander few years back. However after some use i started to despise CVT. I hate the fact that there are no gear changes when you are accelerating and all you hear is a constant engine whine which makes me feel the clutch is slipping or something. On the Nissan sentra that i drove once there was extreme lag from when you hit the gas and by the time the engine climbed to the necessary rpm.It also reminds of me of a lawn mower. We were hoping it would get a 6 or 7 speed auto but it seems CVT is a viable option to save gas for honda. I think all of Nissan cars are CVT now right?

I believe most of the problems have been on 6 cyl Hondas. Our 98 Accord 4 cyl with 210,000 miles and 04 TSX with 145,000 miles are both going strong, with no transmission problems.

The funny thing of this is that the autos in the V6 are what are failing, but the 4cyl autos are rock solid. Now they'll change this to a CVT in 4cyl instead of designing a 6-7sp auto like Subaru has done. Now we will have a new transmission design that is more prone to be faulty in 4cyl that is going to make the 6cyl autos comparably bulletproof. :sadbanana: CVT has been a reliability nightmare for Mini as well as Nissan, but at least many of theirs are with higher torque v6.

With the TSX going away after 2013 you are not going to see a new transmission in it or much of anything new before it goes away. The testing is probably for the JDM cars, the new ILX, or the new TL.
