Removing Resonator on Stock exhaust (Summary Post #1 & #1811)
Just wondering if anyone had tried to take out the stock resonator on the stock TL exhaust system and replaced that with a straight pipe and leaving the rest of the system the same?
I know for a fact that on a few V6's, or other cars, doing this mod, did not give much power gains, but it did make the car sound a little bit more aggressive and tuned. But on other cars, this made the exhaust sound raspy and ricey.
And insight?

So I took the time and made this post so all of the new people don't have to go through 20 pages of discussion.
So far, there are 4 stages of this exhaust mod.
Stage 1.
Least noticeable in exhaust note increase.
Configuration:
Stock exhaust.
Remove mid-muffler. Replace with 2.5" straight pipe. Everything else remains stock.
Cost: Can be anywhere from $30-$60 w/aluminized pipping.
Stage 2.
A tad louder than stage one, a bit more pronounced tone.

Remove mid-muffler. Replace with 2.5" straight pipe.
Remove stock resonator. Replace with Magnaflow resonator part# 10416.
Magnaflow resonator is a 14" long resonator, which dampens and changes the note of the stock exhaust a bit more, thus you get a bit more loudness/tone.
Cost: Magnaflow resonator costs around $60. Install ranges from $60 -$90 w/ aluminized pipping.
Stage 3.
(Tone result TBA)
Stock exhaust.
Remove mid-muffler. Replace with 2.5" straight pipe.
Remove stock resonator. Replace with Dynomax resonator part# WLK-24215.
Dynomax resonator is a 12" long resonator, which is a bit shorter and less dampening than the magnaflow resonator, thus it should give you a bit more loudness/tone than stage 2.
Cost: Dynomax resonator costs around $40. Install ranges from $60 - $90 w/aluminized pipping.
Stage 4.
Loudest setup out of all 3. Has a bit of a rasp, similar to M3 exhaust setup.
Stock exhaust.
Remove Mid-muffler. Replace with a 2.5" straight pipe.
Remove stock resonator. Replace with a 2.5" straight pipe.
Cost: Can be anywhere from $40 - $60.
Note: If you live in a climate that is prone to rain, snow, rust, Stainless steel pipping is highly recommended.
This also does not prevent you from passing smog, as it does not alter the characteristics of the catalytic converters, but it does not mean that this is street legal either as it does alter the stock setup of the exhaust.

I just remember I saw this silver tl a while back with the stock exhaust and it made a tiny gurgle like sound (similar to G35) so I'm hoping this would give it that tone. I mean I read that getting a catback is not going to gain much Hp, and it would mainly be for sound, so this would be ideal for me.
I remember, on my 1997 Jetta VR6, I removed the stock resonator, and it gave the stock exhaust a perfect growl with no rasp or anything.
So any feedback on how it would sound on this car would be awesome before i go ahead and do it.

So I searched the forums and it seems that the user "galespeed" has removed his mid muffler. He seemed to have removed the resonator (closest to cat), and mid muffler (muffler closest to oem canisters) and replaced it with a straight pipe. With that he had a certain resonance, or rasp, or rice canister sound at about 3k rpm. He then put the resonator back on, but kept the mid muffler still straight piped and he said that he thinks the sound is now perfect. I think im goin to do this as well. Remember, don't remove the resonator, just the muffler closest to the rear of the car.

i agree...get rid of the mid muffler and keep the resonator, otherwise, as you mentioned, you will get a pretty harsh rapsy sound.

removing either the resonator or the mid-muffler should not cost more than 35 dollars (at 70/hr). some shops have a min. exhaust charge which is usually an hour, but for something as simple and easy as this 1/2 hr labor is what should be charged.

if you were going to remove something from the oem exhaust i would rec. doing just the mid muffler. i dont think removing the resonator will give you a pleasant sounding exhaust note and if you remove both you are heading into raspy territory. its an easy mod if you are looking to change the sound of the TL

Okay, well I just went ahead and got it done. I had the mid muffler removed, not the resonator. They charged me $30 and it took all about 15 minutes.
Sound. I love it. I think this is the way the TL should have come stock. Similar note to a G35, but a lot more refined and subtle. Fits the TL personality perfectly, compared to the stock exhausts that emit no sound what so ever. The tone is similar to that as the G35, or the Fx, but much smoother and quieter. There is no drone at highway speeds, no rasp, no rice sound, and no rattles.
If your looking to keep the car stock looking, but you feel the stock exhaust is just TOO quiet, and want something a tad bit louder but not something where the wife, girlfriend, neighbors would instantly notice, this is for you!

^-yup, the shop will cut the muffler out, take regular pipe, expand the ends so it slips over the pipe on the car and weld it up. if you wanted to get fancy with everything you could have the shop add flanges to the exhaust so you can remove and replace the straight pipe with the muffler if you ever wanted to go back and do it yourself.

Don't tell anyone that it's been removed. They will give you a value of the car, wash it and put it on their front used line. I doubt they will inspect a 04 + tl.
Maybe just brakes and tires.

The tone is similar, but the volume is not near the Infiniti's exhaust. It's one of those mod's you can hear, but anyone else would not be able to tell the difference, or hardly be able to tell that it's been modified unless its a car enthusiasts.

After having this mod done, I love the outcome but if there could be one thing I wish was better was that it had just a tiny bit more volume. I was wondering what would happen if i replaced the stock resonator, with a smaller resonator?
Would that jsut create a different "bad spot" where it would sound raspy at a certain rpm?
I know an intake would add to the engine noise, but would an intake make the exhaust a little louder?

If your going to name brand exhaust shops their prices are a bit higher. I had it done at a "hole in the wall" shop. Pretty much the same thing. Just tell them to make sure the welds are good.

I talked to the guy today, he said I'd get more sound if the resonator is removed.
I think I'll go that route and maybe do the mid later. I'll go make a stock sound clip now. I'm just worried about how it will sound after its uploaded.
