Just a guess, but going by the magazine numbers the G35 manual is slightly faster.
With Headers installed I would go with the CL-S 6-Speed.
But the poor G35 driver has to look at that BUTT UGLY interior the whole way down the track.

doesnt that seem strange considering the G35 has 20 more hp and like 45 more ft/lbs of torque??
from what i recall the weight is about the same, correct?? i dont think those numbers could be correct, maybe a fluke, but i agree with shawn....the CL-S, either auto or 6 speed, with headers is pretty damn quick....i test drove a 350z, G35 coupe and neither one of them struck me as any quicker than my CL-S automatic with headers...

G35C vs. CL-S
6spd vs. 6spd... the CL-S would win. I think the G35C would take the CL-S off the line and maybe into 2nd gear (more torque and RWD). The CL-S has a much better powerband especially in the 5.5K to 7.2K range... when you are racing... this is the ONLY range you are in... all that low-end grunt, peaky horsepower etc. doesn't count.
It will be a very close race and probably driver-dependant. If you negate driving skills... the CL-S would prevail.
A FAIR test would be a G35C and a CL-S 6spd on drag radials... OR a rolling-start.
Once again... these are just my opinions

Everyone always says adding 18’s or 19’s to OUR car slows it down.
Wouldn’t the same be true for the G35 if ordered with the 18’s?
I believe those are OPTIONAL unless I’m getting confused with the 350Z.
With that in mind, depending how the car is equipped for the magazine review should effect the numbers a bit….NO ???

Their 18s are a lot lighter...I think they are using Volks of some sort. Also, I have said it once...and I'll say it again...I think Nissan is overrating their cars as per the Q45. I know Acura didnt overrate our cars, cuz the drivetrain loss and dyno of CLS 6MT is just about right, we just have really parasitic Automatic transmissions..

still a Masshole
check this thread for dyno numbers of a new G35c

Straightline acceleration, both are about even though the G35C is probably a little quicker off the line, torque/RWD and all.

Shawn,
If you get the 6-speed, you get the 18 inch rims and the ugly fake titanium center console. If you can live with the auto, the center console is black and it looks much better.
I don't understand what one option has to do with the other..

If you like to magazine race, then it looks like the G35 Coupe (6 speed) vs CL-S (6 speed) would be a very close race. Probably even neck and neck.
But over 100 MPH, the G35 would absolutely pull away. Using Car and Driver's numbers, the two cars are very close up to 100 MPH, but after that, it's all G35.

not with headers on the cl, will that happen....

1. The CD (aero resistance) is not that useful without the projected frontal area. Add in other parasitic losses and you are doing some guessing. The inertial loads in different gears would need to be tested too. (Easier to just head to the track).
2. The G35 with RWD is going to hook up faster than the CLS (no kidding).
3. The dyno curve on Scalbert's CLS vs. the dyno on the freshalloy forum has some items that are worth noting. The CLS torque curve -- with mods (headers, pulleys, etc) -- is very flat up to 6+ K. The one-definining feature of the CLS is it's very flat torque curve and higher peak HP. The G35 makes a bit more torque, but depending on the gearing and the lack of VTEC/related goodies, its torque starts dropping off around 5K.
Finally, depending on track conditions, mods like Toyos and light wheels, on the CLS, they could be very even or could be very different depending on driver and other factors like break-in time.

Anything like Continuously Variable Valve Timing?
It’s like have a 3/4 or hot street/track cam engage above 5+K RPM. Below 5K, there are two “milder” cam lobes that induce swirl by opening at slightly different rates. So, there are 3 cam lobes used for one cylinder’s intake valves.
I'm sure someone will mention all of the newer variations out there that combine variable duration and/or lift.
BTW, on the CLS, the single overhead cam -- per bank -- limits how much you can do with variable valve timing (strange contraptions excepted). With a DOHC (double overhead cam) setup you can control the timing of the exhaust and intake individually. My '92 Maxima SE had the variable timing on the intake side only (this could be considered variable valve timing).
