Size Doesn't Matter: Tiny Car Nears 100 MPH in Chase

Officers stopped the motorist for speeding at about 9 p.m. on the northbound 170 Freeway near Sheldon Street. Officers said the driver fled after providing his license and registration.

Cruisers pulled back as the chase continued toward Pasadena and speeds neared 100 mph. Authorities abandoned the pursuit on the eastbound 210 Freeway near Sylmar when they determined the driver's identity and residence.

The base model Smart car features a 1.0-liter, 3-cylinder engine that produces 70 bhp. Smart also offers a BRABUS-modified model with improved suspension and aerodynamics.

I wonder what kind of mileage the Smart car gets at 100 mph?

I don' think the mileage matters much in jail.

Did they strap the car to the roof of the cruiser and take it in as evidence?

I had one as rental in Germany, and I got it up to 150 kph on the autobahn. Not quite 100 mph.

Or perhaps you want to go off-roading in your SMART...

i like the smart car with the busa engine, wouldn't pay anywhere near the actual amount that both of those cost tho. i'd rather get a older mini with a busa in it, cuz then i could still atleast have a passenger.

Honestly, they have more zip than they're given credit for. Some dude in a FourTwo give me a decent run (in the lower gears) while driving the AV6 the other day. He did fairly well until I hit ~60mph, at which point he started to fade.

I saw a ForTwo in the fast lane on the freeway yesterday. I was doing 75.....and he must have been in a REAL hurry as he passed me up.

I haven't seen a Smart car moving above 50 mph- just a few on the streets and a couple on the freeways in congested traffic.

People driving the Prius @ 75+ mph often pass me-- that's about a third of the Prius cars I see.
