another 50MM thread

just like the above, since most of you know cannon, any insight?

i like the cheap prime lens, but i was concidering the medium telephoto 50mm which is like 300$ more, but looks more well built.

and for those hardcore, the 50mm L lens looks awesome but is it worth the $1200?

eventually i want to get a 50mm lens,i just want to know which is worth saving for in the long run, cause i think the 50mm is one lens everyone should have, and i doubt i would ever get rid of it if i got it.

There have been many troubles with Canon's 50L, I have many of their "L's", this is one I stayed away from. If you get a good copy, it's a great lens, as their 35L and 85L is. But many have focus problems with it and Canon couldn't fix when sent for repair.

Canon 1.4 is a good lens, their 1.8 is a good lens, but people think it's just so cheap because it's plastic. The 1.4 is worth the money over the 1.8, it's sharper and has a better bokeh.

As for a 50mm on a cropped body, I didn't like it, I would look at the 35/2 or the 28 1.8, Canon's 35L is worth the $1200, sorry to have let mine go. But if you wanting that portrait lens (ie 85mm on FF) than the 50mm is what you want.

cropped vs FF is still confusing me alot.

i would like the 50mm for model/portrait shooting, are u saying the 85mm is what i would need for a cropped or FF? i would think the 50mm is the lens i need since i have a cropped cam right? (XSi)

or are u saying the 28mm is better on cropped?

thats the parts where u lost me. they all seem to take extremely good portiats. the 85mm looks amazing for people pics

Cropped vs Full Frame. On a crop body you get all of the pixels on that smaller area, which basically magnifies the image by 1.4/1.6, so from what I've noticed people like to carry a crop body with a telefoto lens, and a full frame with a wideangle.

Here's a better visual

70mm on a 5D "full frame"

70mm on a 30D "crop frame"

That said, I still really like my 50mm f/1.8 on my D80. For the money it's got amazing sharpness and color rendition. Since its limited on how wide it is, it forces you to be more creative with your composition.

shot on the 50

if you've only ever used a crop body, I don't think you need to worry too much about the crop factor. You'd be used to how certain focal lengths look on your camera.

Just be aware that while 50mm is considered a photography "standard", it will have a longer field of view on a crop body. I used a 50 1.8 on my rebel and also found it too long for a walk around prime, but it did well for portrait use. After I bought a sigma 30mm though, it found itself in the closet only to come out once I went full frame.

I have since upgraded to the 50 1.4, and I find it much nicer to use and definitely worth the money to me. I think it focuses much more accurately, quickly and quietly especially in low light situations. The bokeh is also MUCH smoother.

I think the 50 1.8 is a great lens for the price, and no real reason not to own it, even on a crop. But if you are going to invest in a 50 1.4, I'd just make sure you like the focal length. Just set a kit lens or something to 50 and walk around with it like that.

I've also heard of design problems w/ the 50 1.2 L causing misfocusing, so not really planning on getting that, unless it is changed. Sigma also has a 50 1.4 that is supposed to be pretty good. I've heard it's supposed to be slightly better than the canon, but not sure if it justifies the $500 price tag over the canon.

yea i've only used my 50mm 1.8 a few times and the last time it had the most use was for a modeling shoot. I just dont like the FF equiv of 80mm, its not so great for everyday use.

shouldve went with the 28m 1.8 as that is closer on my 40D to a 50mm on a full frame body.

Don't mind the color, that has nothing to do with it (probably improper camera settings or no photoshop). I was trying to show how crop bodies effect lenses.

To get the wider effect, you would have to get a ~35mm on a camera with a 1.5 multiplier.

If I remember correctly Canon has both a 1.4, and 1.6 body. With the 1.4, 35mm would still work; if it was 1.6, you'd probably want to jump down to a 28mm.

Full frame also requires more money for now stick with your cropped body, and get a few lens.

D300 has 1.5 crop factor so my 50mm 1.4 is decent, but you learn to use it, like its for single portrait or object shots, not groupshots. lowlight when flash isn't around.

I'm not sure but i don't think nikon has any 1.8 that are wider. their all 2.8 bleh.

Crop. The only full frame Nikon's are the D700 and D3.

shot on the 50
I'm not knocking the 50mm on a cropped, depending on what you're looking for. In the days of film people wanted a 35mm, then it was a 50mm. So most contuine to think that's what they want when they own a cropped body. For what you shot, it worked perfect, like a 85mm on a FF.

It's all about what you want to shoot with it.

its simple, basically whatever focal length a lens is, multiply it by 1.6 to get the focal range on a crop body. So a 50mm on a FF body would be 50mm, but on a crop body (like your xsi) it would be 80mm.

Why jupitersolo is saying that 28mm might be a bit better for you is because 28mm on a crop body = ~45mm which is close to the "true" 50mm on a FF body.

Basically any lens that you put on your camera, the focal length is going to be 1.6x longer that what it "truly is" this isnt great for UWAs since a 17-40mm would be wide on a FF camera but not so much on a crop. On the other hand its great for telephoto lenses since a 70-200mm essentially becomes a 112-320mm

Heres another way to look at it. The sigma 10-20mm on a crop body and the canon 16-35mm on a FF body will pretty much have the same FOV since 10x1.6 = 16 and 20x1.6 = 32

With all that being said it comes down to what you're looking for right now and how much you're willing to spend. Since you're just starting out I would suggest the 50mm f/1.8 (thrifty fifty) it's probably the best bang for the buck lens you can buy from canon. Down the line you can always sell it for a little under what you paid for it and then you can upgrade to the 1.4 if you choose to do so.
