Sundown in US for diesel cars?
That's the title of an editorial analysis in the new "Automobile" magazine I just received in the mail. This includes "Honda, Nissan, Ford and GM...all canceling their previously announced plans for US-market diesel models." Wow! And specifically for Honda, an Acura TSX diesel was being planned...operative word "was". The Germans will pretty much be on their own here....except MAYBE Mazda. They cite that Americans don't fully embrace the idea of diesel autos. And, that the high cost/taxing of gasoline in Europe (relative to diesel) is pretty much opposite, and more volatile in the US.
I know I'm not interested in getting a diesel auto anytime soon.... although that BMW dual-turbo 335d looks sweet...

It would seem a diesel/hybrid would be the best combination for a vehicle. You would have the high torque electric/diesel motor for quicker 0-60 times and improved city mpgs (7AT or CVT). Then you would have the diesel for hwy driving with 20%-40% better mpgs depending on the vehicle (TSX or MDX). I've read about a few Euro diesel/hybrids that got over 50 mpgs combined for a mid-size car like the TSX.
I was thinking the all new 2012 or 2013 MDX would have a V-6 Turbo diesel option. I guess the best we can hope for is cylinder deactivation on the highway for an extra 1 mpg better.
