Running boards prevent panel chipping but accelarte rusting?

Have a 2009 MDX. After one winter noticed all little chipping on the lower section of door panels, probably due to rocks/debris on the road.
I'm going to put the same clear 3M film that I put on the front nose on the side panels.

Does installing running boards prevent this? I read they cause other problems like snow/dirt piling up and speeding up rusting. Also, you bump your legs when getting in/out.
Those who have them, do you like it (aside from the look)? any issue with rusting?
