Need Advice about MDX

Good day all,

I am thinking of buying an MDX. However my situation is:
1. I am in Saudi Arabia.
2. No Acura Dealer, only Honda exists here.
3. There are car workshops that can fix Honda and claim can fix acura.
4. I saw few imported Acuras.

my question for MDX owners.

1. Do you know if MDX has the same engine or most consumeable parts as the Honda Pilot?

2. Navigation system will not work in Saudi, I have been doing a lot of reading about a work around but could cost 500 Euro, can anyone suggest any alternative solutions to this problem?

3. In your opinion, do you think the car is worth the risk and trouble having listed my situation? I am so biased on reports from consumer reports.org that mention that MDX is the best in its class as compared to BMW and other luxury cars.

Thank you

do they sell the honda legend (RL), because that has basically the same engine and awd system (3.7/sh-awd).

There is very little in the 2010 MDX that is shared with Honda products. The engine is the 3.7 but it is based on the 3.5. I'm sure that the 3.5 is popular but the 3.7 might be a one of in your location.
If the Pilot has navigation then you maybe could get the Nav to work in the MDX.
The MDX has a lot of electronics and dealers would require the software to diagnose it so that could also be a problem.
Your ace card is that the MDX is reliable so if it never breaks then fixing it is not an issue.

I purchased a used 11 MDX adv/ent used with 30,000 miles and the issues I've had were:
- center arm rest cup holder had to replaced (warranty)
- replaced Driver1 key fob (warranty)
- adjusted HID headlights (warranty)
- replace passenger/front TPMS sensor (warranty)
- repair of passendger side door puddle lights (warranty)
- replaced front stabilizer bar endlink because of torn boot (warranty)
- replaced right front magnetic shock because of knocking (warranty)
- reflash of 6AT because of TSB (warranty)

The endlink and magnetic shocks replacement would have cost me $2500-$3000 if it wasn't covered by the basic warranty. I don't think a Honda dealership will cover an Acura warranty or extended warranty? It might cost you 25%-50% more to keep the MDX running outside of routine fluid changes and minor maint. I went ahead and purchased a extended warranty for $2400 for 5yr/120,000 miles because of the electronics and magnetic shocks.

The MDX is a great car, but it's probably not worth the hassle. The BMW X5 is definitely a good alternative. If you really want an MDX, Honda dealers should be able to deal with it... Any mechanic could really work on it, and Honda mechanics should be relatively familiar with the engine... All current Honda engines are very similar J series motors.
