MPG on MDX
MPG on MDX
Hey all,
My trip calculator tells me I'm getting 16mpg on my 08'MDX. I mostly drive 20(hi) / 80(local). How can I improve my gas mileage guys?
50% oil on my multi-display is that normal? I just picked her up 4 weeks and have never owned SUV in the past.

1. use premium fuel
2. Keep rpm under 3k... no vtec haha
3. don't warm up your vehicle for a long time
4. shift to N at stoplights
5. coast to red lights
also 16 mpg isn't that bad for mostly city driving

check your tire pressures and make sure they are properly inflated. As well if you are near a 30K interval or need to change the engine air filter, change it! Use premium fuel and as well don't accelerate too hard!
When I purchased my MDX I was averaging around 12.7. After the A23 service (oil change, transmission fluids and filters) my average is now constantly 15.2- 16.4 ( 70% city-30% hwy) so I saw an improvement after the service. My trips are mostly short (2-3 miles) with stops in between.
On highway trips I've gotten 22-23 mpg.
Oh yeah and I saw my trip computer show over 29mpg on the highway once. See my Avatar pic. but never again.
Mine too. I get 20.5 (really 19.5) or so in 50 highway/50 city. I'm just about to add a K&N filter to see if that helps. I've put 6K on my 07 in 45 days and it's seems to average 20 MPG on a mix of premium and mid-grade.

I have engine filter but did not get around to replace it. I'm going to take it easy on the pedal for the new years. Also coming from 04'TSX so 100HPs makes me want to just go vroom~vroom.
And I wonder (wait why am i vtec err wasting gas).

The cold tire pressure is about 33-34 for my 07 MDX. I believe that's what recommended. I bought the truck as a acura certified pre-own and the air filter is checked in their inspection checklist. Should I have dealer to check/change it one more time?
Both from trip computer and manual calculation shows pretty much the same number

Are your numbers from the trip computer or manual calculation?

When we travel from home at 850' above sea level to 49' near Orlando we average about 2 mpg more than on the return trip. So, I'm expecting about 23 going and 21 returning in the MDX next year. As I stated before, I wish the MDX had an instant MPG display, but I guess the powers-to-be at Acura thought it would hurt sales to see those 7-10 mpg numbers on acceleration, and 13-17 around town.
I too am wondering about the poor gas milage. My MDX is fairly new (~ 3000 mi). Drove from Northern Cal to Southern Cal and only got ~ 20 mpg. Does this improve after a break in period?
Another question pertaining to the trip meter display (and I'm too lazy to look up in the manual) is: What is the "aver miles per hour". Why do I ask? It seems to be stuck at 36 miles per hour, even after my long trip from SF to LA and after mostly freeway driving to and from work. The aver miles per hour has to be higher than that. Is my display faulty?

We have a 2008 MDX and for a big car I think its pretty good on gas. On a 500 mile highway trip we average about 25-26mpg.
For my wife's daily commute to work and day care, 60% highway 40% city she gets between 18-21mpg - always. We only use Sunoco Ultimate or BP, whatever the highest grade they offer is. I also get an oil change every 6-7k miles and I get the maintenance performed by the book and only at my Acura dealer. My wife actually uses the car more than i do and she drives it pretty fast. I have noticed over the past few weeks that the mpg is down a tiny bit but thats only cause she uses the remote starter to warm it up in the mornings and she lets it go for about 15min sometimes
. At least the car is warm for her and my son in the morning. Me on the other hand, i freeze my arse off when i hop in my TL to go to work.

Use 91 octane or higher, keep tires inflated correctly, dont hit the gas pedal hard, and carry as little weight as possible.
If you use premium thats octane of 93/94.
If you use plus thats 89/90 octane.
If you use regular thats 86/87 octane.
I fill at half empty and rotate between plus and premium.
Regular and Plus often dont have cleaner agents.
Get your plugs replaced and valves sandblasted cleaned.
