Bringing this one back up, is the consensus that a K&N drop-in filter is just as good as a short ram cold air intake for these cars? I'm not looking to make our '06 a monster but a little more power and some more mpg would be cool. I also have a '06 Trailblazer SS RWD which runs 13.7@101 with a cai.

 

Be careful of cold air intakes, they are generally mounted lower than stock, some of course are out the side through the wheel well/splash guard. You just need to go through one not so deep pool of water after a rain, suck water in thru the intake/filter, and hydro-lock your motor. Ask me how I know. My wife did it with our stock Grand Caravan which brings its air in through a hose mounted to an intake at the grille. A new motor is not cheap. I didn't know it could happen so easily, she didn't either. It had a paper air filter and pulled the water right thru it.

 

Very surprised that no one has produced some sort of F/I option for the MDX.

From earlier in the thread, I see that Comptech had one in development before they went belly-up. Wonder if the new form of Comptech, CT Engineering, will further develop or if they'd be interested in selling their plans.

 

I'm not.. the MDX is a SUV not a sports car. It's not the hardware that's the issue. You can fab a one off t/c or s/c option.. it's the tune and support that's difficult to manage.

There's a Odyssey in Alabama sponsored by Honda that's t/c'd .. Putting down ~450 at the wheels with a 6MT swap. They still have issues with the tune and finish of the ride.. it's not easy to support a FI car, especially one not built for it. Aside from transmission concerns, do you know how expensive the rear diff on an MDX is? and how much of a PITA it is to replace?

 

Right, b/c God forbid that an owner want more power from their "SUV" and everyone knows that no one makes superchargers for other SUV applications or that other makes don't have "expensive" parts that are difficult to replace.

I'd think, or rather hope, that a mildly boosted MDX's transmission would be able to hold together. At the very least, the company that would develop an F/I option would find some of these limits.

 

So basically you want a company to throw money at project where maybe 5% of MDX owners would even consider making their ride FI and of that 5%, maybe 1% will actually do it. Instead of complaining, why don't you develop it? Then you can comeback here and market it to those interested. Don't be surprised when the dozens of people who say they're in back out though. My suggestion, sell your MDX and buy an RDX or a trailblazer SS.

btw.. if you didn't know, CTE's s/c kit for the TL was a joke. Roots blower with no tune = rod through the block. A $5k kit like that costs double to get it tuned and running reliably.. even at low boost.

 

Making the case for developing a specific product and whether that product makes revenue rest with the manufacturer. The random numbers you threw out are just one aspect of a successful business model. Whether those numbers are accurate or not is anyone's guess. But let's indulge your hypothetical numbers that have no market research behind them and are the generalities of your perception...for giggles

164,271 07+ MDX's have been sold.

5% of 164,271 = 8,213.55 owners interested

1% of 8,213.13 = 82.13 superchargers kits sold.

Let's suppose a 5k S/C kit price and a 20% margin...the end result is 82k on a single product line. Suppose a 10% margin even and the end result is 41k in a single revenue stream. And considering that bigger businesses have existed on smaller margins and net profit, yeah, I guess I do want someone to throw some money at it.

And if you think my post was complaining, you need to develop a much thicker interweb skin.

Yeah, I know of Comptech's SC for the TL. I drove it before it was released to the public. Drove great.

Any blower w/o an additional fuel tuning is a recipe for disaster.
