CMBS - is this working ?
Hi,
I'm not sure whether my CMBS system is working OK in my car.
I saw other posts claiming that the system doesn't act as advertise, specifically it doesn't provide the "break break" light warning (except in almost crashing situations) and the second stage warning (the seat belt pulling) doesn't happen at all.
I tested it in many road conditions both with ACC on and off. Still I am unable to cause the system to engage as it should. ACC on the other hand works perfectly well in any driving conditions and situations.
Is it possible that the systems are set differently in different cars? Does anyone have a suggestion on how to test it well? Did anyone experience this type of problems in a recent model cars? I found some posts relating to this in the cars from 2007, but I would hope it would have been fixed by now if the problems really existed.

CMBS has certain thresholds based upon speed. Stage 1 will activate (beeping) if it senses a collision will occur. If I remember correctly, its 10MPH difference in your speed and the car infront of you while your car is over 35. Then the second stage seatbelt pulling will occur if you have not taken any action and are above 35. The third and final stage is braking right before the accident to reduce the amount of injuries, not prevent the crash.
IMO the acura acc system isn't as good as it could be. In my 7, I have the ability to keep a 4 second distance until 105 MPH! In the RL that I last saw, the max was 1.38 seconds going 80 MPH. It may have changed but I believe that plays a part in it.

Someone cut me off the other day on the highway and I was moving at a good rate faster than he was and I got to the second stage of the CMBS where the lights flash and the seatbelt tightens. I hope to never experience the 3rd stage!!

I have a '10 MDX and I have found engaged the 1st stage- "Brake" light flashing in the MID and an audible notification- just in highway driving- whether is was tailgating a car in front or changing lanes. I, too, hope not to experience the 3rd stage ever.

Testing your CMBS is like testing your airbags, don't do it. This is a last resort safety system, not a feature to be played with like the stereo.
