Catalytic Conveter replacement question

My 2007 MDX has thrown a check engine light related to one of the catalytic converters. My mechanic explained it was not able to be replaced with a "generic" brand due to CA smog CARB rules and that I had to buy an OEM one from Acura...the whole bill parts and labor was going to be about $900.

seemed high to me for one cat. I honestly wondered if any smog person would hoenslty be looking up under my car to see if I had a CA CARB cat or an aftermarket one.. as long as one is there.... maybe they really check fro this nonsense....

I was curious if you guys think this bill is a rip off or is this what I should expect to pay?

if you need additional info, let me know.

thanks for any help you can provide!

It all depends on the facility you are going to.. Some are very thorough, some others don't really check for anything but emissions only.
I live in a place where they almost take your DNA as part of the test... So here its OEM or you are F***.

you can buy aftermarket and have some issues with passing. RV6 makes high flow cats for the MDX that are $400ish and you should be able to pass.

Also have you tried using a can of seafoam in your gas tank? Usually that helps clogged cats
