Buying Used 2004 Touring Silver MDX w/Navi
Hello all, Coming over from the Third Gen TL side... Buying my girl a 2004 Touring MDX with 130K miles... Started her up and had a CEL on... read the code and it read 300-306 which is misfires.... I asked the dealer what gas he used and he said 87... Tomorrow i will be putting in 2 gallons of 93 to the already almost empty tank to see if the code disappears... I also heard noise coming from the tensioner... Besides that, what hidden dangers are there in this year MDX??
Thanks.
Alex.
Thanks.
Alex.

Pretty sure 87 gas isn't causing the misfires (the ECU should adjust for the lower octane) so even a tank full of 93 isn't going to fix them.
Any maintenance history on this MDX? I'm guessing it needs a valve adjustment and new plugs - the valve adjustment seems to be a much overlooked maintenance item (due at 105K) that causes a lot of random misfires on higher mileage MDXes. The tensioner noise lends me to believe it needs a timing belt/water pump replacement as well.
If there is no evidence of any of this being done just make sure to price it into your offer - could be $1000-$1500.

Already bought it. Timing belt WAS done thats probably why I now need a valve adjustment. ima check plug over the weekend. i still have to troubleshoot pulley.

I have a 2004 with 198k on it. I had to replace all the brake pads and front rotors and I replaced a starter. The one pain in the ass problem we had was a failed gas tank. Something sticking inside caused gas filling issues and it had to be repalced. I did the 105k service w/ valve adjustment at the time and it's always ran great before and after. Acura makes a great SUV so good luck and congrats.
