Our 2011 MDX rear view mirror fell off when we were pulling out of the driveway the other day. Normally I would go get a windshield glue kit and fix it up no problem.
Unfortunately it looks like the metal piece that the rear view mirror slides on to came completely detached from the piece that is glued to the windshield. Now I can see some kind of clip looking piece and torn paint where the metal piece was glued on before.
Can I just reattach the metal clip to the piece still on the windshield with a special kind of plastic/metal glue? Please advise.
Thank you! Piece still attached to the windshield.
you can try a plastic epoxy; I would slide the plastic piece off of the mount and try to epoxy it off the car....so as to not to induce fumes in an enclosed space.
i'm not sure....without actually investigating your particular instance...
I just know from experience with other types of cars; there's a base that the mirror slips or slides into. if you can slide the broken piece out of the base....that would make the epoxy job a lot easier...as then it doesnt have to deal with gravity.
or maybe it cant be separated, in which case the base will need to come off the windshield and a new mirror all together would need to be glued back on
I took out the clip and it didn’t seem to serve any kind of purpose. The piece attached to the windshield is actually metal, as is the piece the rear view mirror slides onto. Any recommendations for a good epoxy?
you would look into an epoxy that binds with glass and metal!
JB Weld makes a glass epoxy called clearweld.
GorrillaGlue makes one that is clear.
Locktite makes one as well.
be sure to prep the surfaces well! remove debris and then clean with rubbing alcohol
I don’t need to attach anything to the glass. It would be metal on metal. I attached a couple more pictures to be more clear on what is going on. Once I get that metal clip back on, then the rear view mirror will slide right on and I can secure with the small screw.
This is the piece that fell off that the mirror slides onto. End result should look like this.
That metal clip is what locks the Rear view mirror in place, It uses a "twist and lock" mechanism IS NOT MEANT TO SLIDE..
Put the rear view mirror base in a 90° angle and turn clockwise, It should lock in place... What you have there is a fatigued clip which you can replace for 5 bucks IIRC.
What I found weird is that it looks to be a wedge base, not a sliding system... If I remember it right only the 07s had that wedge base.

Ohhh I know what happened... That is a Wedge to Blade type adaptor! Did the OP had his Windshield replaced? Because that is most definitely a Wedge base..
Ok in any case it works the same way, Slide that adaptor into your Rear View Mirror and lock it.. Now you should put the wedge inside the clip in a 90° (It will fall in place ex: Horizontal) now twist the base clockwise (turn to vertical) and it will lock, Securing the rear view mirror in place... If it keeps falling you will have to replace the clip because it does lose strength over time, If it is weak it will drop the entire rear view mirror in a speedbump/pothole.

The windshield has not been replaced by us, but the car was bought used so who knows what happened before.
This is not a slide or twist type of situation... I honestly don't know what the heck is going on, so maybe it was a windshield replacement and then modified (rigged up) to what I have now.
In my pictures above, the shiny metal piece (slide?) had glue / black paint residue on it that matched directly to the piece that is still attached to the windshield. It was like someone took the metal piece and glued it directly to the piece on the windshield. I scraped the glue and paint off of the metal piece so I could get a good seal / fit whenever I end up gluing it back on if that is what I decide to do.
From what I have read, the piece still attached to the windshield is part of a wedge connection, but I definitely have nothing available that would twist into place.

What I mean is that it seems to be some kind of combination of the two.
I just had an "AHAH!!!!" moment when I was making dinner on how this could have possibly happened. The windshield fits 2008 - 12 but the rear view mirror mounting method may have changed across those five years. It was replaced with a windshield that had a different mount. They fixed it by gluing a metal slide piece to the clip, and the glue finally failed.
I am going to GorillaWeld it like they did and hope for the best.
Yes that is a Wedge Base but AFAIK it only came with the 07s because I had a windshield replaced already and they delivered a newer one with the Blade base.. What we did is use a Heat Gun and remove the blade base and attached my wedge base into the new windsiheld...
