2011 MDX acceleration issues
2011 MDX acceleration issues
Just leased a 2011 MDX and am occasionaly experiencing a horrible "bucking" when I accelerate between first and second or second and third gear. mechanic is saying you will feel some movement during acceleration, but this is ridiculous. I've had an MDX before and never had this problem. Doesn't happen all the time. Seems only if the car is warmed up, sitting idle at a light and then boom, it kicks back. Anyone else experiencing this? what could be causing this?
My '11 MDX Advance is smooth as silk.

I've had a 2011 for about a month now and can't say I've observed that the OP has. Although with all ATs, I think there is an adjustment to the way the tranny shifts, since it behaves differently under light acceleration and when you stomp on it. In D, I think when you start out light, and realize that it isn't going as quickly as it should, and then stomp on it, there may be a lurch because the TCM has to adapt abruptly. That phenomena, I have experienced with my 2011 in D.
Here's a blog post from Edmunds about the TSX Wagon's AT shifting, it may or may not apply here, but it seems to make sense, so take it for what it's worth:

This was the part that I think may apply here:
Like I said, take it for what it's worth.
So what we get is a transmission full of ratios, plus programming that swaps eagerly between a handful of them whenever the throttle pedal senses the hint of enthusiasm. So the car is fast. And we also get a fly-by-wire throttle pedal calibrated for very aggressive tip in. So the car jumps ahead, which feels fast.
At the same time, the transmission will shift into the tallest gear possible under light throttle loads, so overall fuel efficiency is improved. And the torque converter wants to disengage and let the engine coast under light throttle loads, also helping to deliver a good mpg number.
So if you’re wondering why you drive like a klutz in medium speed traffic, it’s because the transmission is trying to suspend the laws of physics and deliver both speed and fuel efficiency at the same time. It could shift less, but then you would complain that the car feels sluggish and you would whine about the fuel economy besides. And if you wonder why the guy in the car in front of you keeps tapping his brakes, it’s because the sensation of coasting is not what you want when the traffic is dense, so everyone rides the brake a little just to know what the car is doing.

Fast is one thing jumping or lurching is another. My MDX is smooth no matter what I do. There should be a bang shifter kit for the trans so the car could perform a bit better but I have not found one yet.
I have a 2010 MDX and have not noticed this transmission issue, very smooth in most instances. I do agree, with S mode, shifts seem more abrupt, but that's the whole point of the S mode, throttle and transmission become more responsive. There are a couple problems though, the S mode can be accessed too easily, sometimes I slot it in S by mistake because of the proximity to D, but I pick up on it quickly due to the change in transmission personality. The biggest issue though is that even in S mode, the transmission constantly wants to switch from 1st to 2nd gear immediately and it will not hold the gear unless you have the throttle planted to the floor. Like any new transmission, I think it could use some software tweaks....
