Recently developed a 2000 RPM low speed rattle under exhaust manifold. Service Bulletin describes symptoms related to a harmonic vibration with heat fatigue and recommends removal of the right front axle and replacement of old heat shield with new shield for ~ $500.00 US. The shield is a dual sheet steel laminate that is form fitted to cover right wheel bearing assy. Not a lot of room to negotiate a fix without going to the dealership. Any one have any ideas on the problem and fix(es)?

just remove the shield yourself and keep it off... you don't really need a replacement especially at $500

Does to axle have to come off? If it does, that's a problem for me and friends who work in dealership service bays. We don't have the special tools required to pull the axle.
