Question 2002 MDX Ambient Temperature Wiring Issue

I purchased my 2002 MDX in 2014, and the ambient temperature gauge always read -40F. I purchased a replacement gauge and went to install it and found that the wiring to the unit had been severed to the unit where the gauge installation happens. Does anyone have any ideas to repair this problem? Parts aren't available unless I purchase the entire wiring harness. Soldering won't work due to the break area being so close to the rubber protection at the top of the unit. I'm considering a junk yard hunt to remove a similar unit at a workable point so I can solder and waterproof the area. Any other suggestions are greatly appreciated! Thx. Bob
