I am tracking down and fixing all the oil leaks on my 2001 MDX. The latest one looks like a transmission oil leak where the shift cable mates with the transmission. I removed the shifter cable cover and there is clearly a leak from something in there, but nothing obvious. I reviewed the service manual and the on-line parts schematic and I don't see any o-rings or gaskets. The fly wheel looks dry so I don't think its the rear seal. Historically there were many leaks so perhaps this is just years of oil dripping down from the valve covers and collecting in this cover? The images I included do not show the cover, which was removed but had oil on the outside of that too. Also, there is so much dirt I can't really distinguish motor oil and trans fluid at this point. Any ideas on the cause of this oil leak?
The rear main oil seal with the cover O-ring is leaking.
Wouldn't there be signs of oil on the torque converter teeth? It looks dry. I remove the observation plate its dry there too. All the oil on the observation plate is from the outside.

No, it wouldn't. There are oil bypass passages on the engine block and rear cover that direct the leaking oil down into the inspection cover area.
I know how you feel, man. This is a tough bullet to swallow. You really need to decide if you're going to keep this car for the long haul and fix it ($$$$) or just top up the motor oil until you ditch the car.
