'01 nav computer is awful.
'01 nav computer is awful.
It's my first post. I've had my MDX for a few months and I love it, I was a big honda fan, now I'm loving Acura.(went from a civic to and MDX)
I know I would be much happier with a newer MDX, but I have this 01 and hope to get many more years out of it. The nav computer isn't even worth using. Besides having to buy a new map dvd for 100+ dollars just to display the right roads, the program looks and runs like a DOS program. I bet it was decent at the time it came out, but its 2010 now, and I don't like it.
I hope someone out there has info that could help me.. here's my questions..
Can my 01 nav/trip computer be upgraded to a newer version like a computer from a '10 or something?
Is there any way to go without it? Like the thing on it I use is to control my AC, fans, I don't care as much about the MPG info.
I'm kind of a computer hobbyist so this old looking program is an insult to my geekiness. I'd like to take out the existing screen and replace it with a better lcd touch screen connected to a laptop or mini computer installed in the car. From there I'd like to tether my phone's 3G internet and use the carputer for not only google map navigation and bluetooth.. but use a large hard drive for a large mp3 collection... Pandora, and other streaming radio stations.. the possibilities of a fully functional computer is almost limitless and awesome. I'm not sure if I'd try running Android, Ubuntu or windows on it, maybe try different things.. I actually don't even use my 6 cd changer/tape deck/fm radio.. Well the sound quality of it is pretty good so I guess I just use it for aux input.. other than that, it's 2010, CD's are outdated. I love all the cool luxury features of the MDX but you can get a new ford focus for 10 grand and that has bluetooth and car sync capabilities.. I hope I can upgrade my car computer.
I'll be googling this topic too and keep you updated if I find answers or get anything working. I'd like to sell the existing DVD nav setup while I do it.
Thanks.

So I spent 2 hours trying to find answers online... no luck.. so here's an answer I discovered myself:
I unplugged the nav/trip computer and the climate controls above it still work great.. It's just a little limited, I have to have it in full auto mode all the time, where it turns on the AC and heat by itself according to what temperature I set it to. I'm happy with that...
I'm going to be shopping for a 7 inch lcd touch screen now.. The nav face is 9.5 inches if i wanted to custom fit a different face..
