Window Tint Advice

I want any advice about Window Tint anyone has. I'm looking to tint my windows on my 06 TL for the first time. Like what tint looks best, brand, percentage, how much I should be paying etc.. Thanks

The internet has so much information regarding tint, I really don't see why this would need to be asked for a specific car.

Hi Warren,

You're new. I've seen a couple new threads you've opened in the last few days. Don't feel the need to open a new thread for everything. Please utilize the search function and even use google (type in Acurazine first) and then whatever your heart desires. I promise you Acurazine is a GOLDMINE of information and with a little due diligence, you will find everything you need.

It's the whole, "teach a man to fish" mentality; it's not that we don't want to help, it's that the information is out there already

I like 35% tint all around (except windshield). My tinter charges me $200 to do a sedan with a quality Llumar film. He also makes sure tint goes all the way behind the rubber strip on the back quarter windows (search and you'll see what im talking about), and he tints the entire rear window and does not cutout around the third brake light which looks tacky IMO.

Also, be advised that 3G window swipes will eventually scratch your tint with vertical lines. Some cars do it worse than others, but either way im pretty sure every TL will do this even if its minor. To fix this I used a felt strip wrapped around the inner window swipe. The door panels need to be removed to do this, but its not hard. You then pull the rubber strip off the metal door, and wrap it entirely with felt then jam it back on the metal door so it stays. No glue or anything required and has been working perfect for me for I think 3 years now.

Hope this helps.

Yup, confirm that mine is scratched and need to get it redone, not sure why no felt was installed as it's a pretty common issue regarding tinted windows. Probably price cutting by the previous owner.

When I went to install my tint, the guys knew this car had an issue with scratching so offered me to install "moleskin felt" for 10 bucks a window. *shrug* I figured I'd let them do it for a little less headache.

I got tint done about 6 years ago but lately have issues with the adhesive getting on the windows now. JTS97Z28 was it pretty easy to get felt back on there and staying with no adhesive? Can I justvuse regular felt from a fabric store or a certain kind?

I might just redo it myself and use goo gone to get the old adhesive off the metal area. Door panel is no issue I've taken it off before for sound deadening

For the OP, I've tinted many times using 3M and solar gard. I like solar Gard more but both are great. Just dont go super cheap and make sure to get a brand with a lifetime warranty.

Oh yeah it was so easy that im not even sure why guys mess around with this moleskin stuff with adhesive that eventually gets all over the windows. I used felt material that I got from the fabric store and its been perfect for about 3 years now. When you pull the rubber strip out you just cut a strip to length and enough to wrap completely around the entire strip. Its then held back in place on its own when its pushed back on the metal door panel, then the door panel itself. I just made sure that the felt was pretty tight around the stripe before placing it back on the door and thats all there is too it. They have been flawless since I installed them. years ago and not a single trace of a scratch on any window.

thanks for the tip! i'm going to do this for sure. i just put on new tint (to go darker in the front windows) and i'm getting a ton of adhesive everytime the window moves. luckily the guy installed it bad so he's re-doing it this weekend. i'll have to put this felt on before i roll the new ones down again. thanks!

I got 35% once in my life and regretted every moment. Since then I only get 18-20% all around.
I also tried 5% but it makes the window look like plastic. At least 18-20% gives it a nice dark window effect and it keeps the heat and eyes out.

I used felt as well.

my tinter gave me one strip of mole skin.
I didnt apply it correctly and got adhesive EVERYWHERE.

cleaned it off and just stuffed felt into the door/window track

So in my state ( NC ) the max limit is 35%. I'm debating between 50% and 35%. My main concern is not being able to see out of it at night. Is that a problem with 35%?

Depends where you are. In winter in the boonies it can get a bit dark but in the city it's usually fine. I suggest not going too dark on the back glass, personally I dislike it if I can't see properly while backing up.

Wait until it's been 10 years if you don't have any felt.

I'm 35% around and 50% entire front windshield. Car isn't a daily I have 2 other vehicles to play with it barely sees 5000 miles a year. Haven't had any issues with LEO about it.
