Aren't the heatsinks rear-mounted to the bulb?

^ Yes they are mounted to the rears. Ive just made enough room and a bit extra for the heat sinks. The heat sinks have full clearance inside the housing

Wow really? I would have thought they would have been too deep and that would be the main complication of doing this retrofit. So if the TLX LEDs actually do fit within the TL housing, heat sinks included, I wonder why this retrofit is as complicated as you say it is?

Wiring is one thing, but that seems much easier to deal with than components that are not physically compatible. My naive mind says gut out the internals of the 3G housing and find a way to mount it and align it right? Right?

What's the temperature of the heatsinks at steady-state? Have you performed a long-term temperature test of the assembled unit?

I'm curious to know if the housing will approach a melt temperature of the housing thermoset...

These would fit nicely in the 4G headlights as the 4G headlights have a lot more room inside compared to the 3G.

It should fit similar to the 3G TL, but you're gonna have to make a custom turn signal... Since the TSX turn signal is inboard in the headlight.

NOOOOO.....

There is nothing worse than reading through every comment in a thread this awesome, going through all the pictures, drooling and riding this emotional roller coaster... Only to find that the OP hasn't updated the thread...

Seriously cool retrofit though, can't wait to see how it turns out.

Don't lose hope everyone!! Im still piecing together all the little parts I need. I plan to do heat testing when I have them closed and go from there. If they make it they make it! If not then ill have to rework.

I own a renovation company and I bartend in the evenings so time has been slim for me! Im working on them in my spare time and I promise depending on how busy I am that I should have them done once I get all parts and before Christmas

What's with the teaser? Trust me if I was the first to do this mod, I would want bragging rights!

And so many who are trying to do the install don't want to share the details? As if they want to patent it or something? I dunno. Back in the day there seem to be a lot more sharing/helping, DIYs that has made such a difference to me. I credit it all for how I was able to make my ideas/imagination into reality. You'd think that as the 3G has gotten older and there are newer members (who benefit from the wealth of the old threads/info/DIYs) that would mean there would be more sharing/info in the future. Seems like the opposite in some respects. These statements are not directly at wojo, it's just something I've noticed lately here and there on the forum.

Funny story along these lines, and rocky, this one involves you.

When I first purchase my TL I was genuinely terrified that rockyfeller would not share the DIY info on how to install a 3/4 din DVD player in to the cubby. I was so pumped to do it but had my reservations, and he was a big cheese that could have easily blown me off.

Long story short, he sent me a ton of pics and guided me over 4 lengthy PMs or so in how to perform the install. To this day it was a crystallizing moment wherein I wanted to make sure I 'pay it forward' as much as possible.

Just riffing here, but hoping others too will 'pay it forward'.

Anyone on this site doing this mod is just copying someone else from another forum anyway. It isn't like they are original, multiple ppl have already done it.

I can somewhat understand not wanting others to copy you. I have seen some ppl post build threads only to see other ppl copy their build even down to the small details and color of paint, etc.

Haha, yes in fact I have said many times that I get very engrossed in during modding and don't pay attention to anything else. I'm a perfectionist and get engrossed with the goal of getting to my goal. I'm sure almost all of you can relate.

Many of my mods start out according to procedure. Then midway I realize that I have to do it slightly different for a reason. Then when I'm done I'm like......OH CRAP I didn't take any pictures!! How am I going to post a DIY now?? So I do have regrets with that.

Looking back what I really should have done is plan it out better. To think of incorporating a DIY from the outset. Back then I would have to think to go upstairs and hunt for my full size camera. And nowadays we have our phones next to us. Taking pics of everything around us has become second nature.

So yes, I admit I could and should have done more. Particularly with how I modded my front grille, bumper, fogs and puddle lights. Also the DVD player into the console deserved a detailed DIY, should have done that one. Well, at this point who cares, who watches DVDs? lol. I yanked mine out. But the point is I wish I had posted more pics because that would mean typing 1000 words less, lol.

But whenever possible I really have tried to at least explain what I did. (case in point, anyone who has gone through my lighting/AV threads.) And anyone that's PM'd me knows I take the time to go through detail as much as I can.

So that is why when I see someone post a well done DIY, I really say WOW, because I really appreciate the extra time, effort and thought that goes into it. To think you don't get paid for it and it's for the love of modding and sharing. But if you've got a car that is bone stock or you're just a lurker on the forum that hardly posts, I don't think you'll really totally get what I'm saying here. And it's easy to take for granted or leech off of what's been beautifully stored forever on our forum.

BTW DeathMetal you are among one of the top of the list with contributions man, I've seen many of your threads (BTW I'm doing my armrest this weekend thanks to you! ) and what you've been doing is much appreciated! So that's how it works folks. Paying it forward and it comes back to you!

I do understand what you mean up to a point. But you are still "modifying the mod" or adapting it for the TL. So the concept might be based on something else, but on the 3G TL, I'd call it original.

Think of the very first person who blacked/cleared out headlights. I don't know who that person is exactly, and I'm sure that is debatable. We can say; "well people have been baking headlights to open them for years before that." But think about that first person's task on the 3G. The risk involved on expensive headlights. They had no real DIY to follow, just a concept. So there are steps involved that are totally uncharted territory because you have to figure out step by step how to proceed. I call that a pioneer. We're all smart and think we can figure most things out ourselves. But that is a special kind of smart and that person goes through extra pain for the mod. While I'm sure I could have figured out how to do the majority of my mods myself (except the navi "OK hack" and custom splash screen. haha I wouldn't have figured that one out in 5000yrs, lol) I'll admit I would have easily taken DOUBLE the time if I didn't have pics, tips and guidance.

I can also tell you I have seen MANY people copy my mods when I go to meets. I parked at a store once and came out and saw another TL parked next to me. I kid you not, I never thought I would see a TL that was nearly a carbon copy of mine haha. The wheels were slightly off, that's about it. But to me it's like OK wow so AZIne has really influenced us all.

A girl gets annoyed if someone is wearing the same dress. It's like an insecurity...."Hmm does she look better in it that I do??" Come on guys, get it together! You think you got the best car out there? You go, you! haha. Someone copy you, so what? Be flattered. You are still the original!

Yes it's a small, silly, but nice thing to have bragging rights to be the first. So I can understand how someone keeps things under wraps WHILE they are still modding (like wojo is.) But if you are already DONE with the mod, post it!! Why wouldn't you? You'll get props. And whoever copies after you, even to the paint or last screw; good. Is everything in life a competition or race? I don't get it.
