I should be able to figure it out it just hasn't been on my mod list, but it should be #1. To be honest I haven't fallen in love with my car yet its month 4 and I still kinda like driving my acura legend better cause its so much smoother but def not as fast as the TL and I love the looks. Hopefully this mod will help me love the manual cause I find myself looking on craigslist for autos every now and then but nothing even close to the awesome price/mileage/color combo I found.

How much Play is the flywheel supposed to have? I just pulled mines and it moves freely about 4 inches. Does that mean the flywheel is bad?

I have it completely out of the car. It spins side to side like 4 inches. For example if I lay it down on the floor tooth side down, I can spin the clutch mating surface 4" side to side with my hand very easily with no resistance what so ever

https://acurazine.com/forums/3g-tl-performance-parts-modifications-112/113-removal-slave-cylinder-check-valve-734300/

Cliffs notes: (although I highly recommend you read the ENTIRE other thread)

You take the checkvalve out of the slave cylinder
preserve the life of your clutch
stop that annoying lag between shift and actual engagement, especially noticeable on 1st to 2nd shifts
your car now drives as it should have...

if you've had experience driving stick...and the TL doesn't "feel" normal to you...like you have to baby the clutch and it's more like it's controlling you etc...that numb shift feel...if you experience any of that...this is for you.

Thanks again to the original posters for pointing us in the right direction.
Wow this is exactly how I've been feeling since I picked up my TL 2 months ago. This is my 3rd manual car after 10 years of driving and I thought it was just me. Haven't had the time to read this just yet, but I can't wait!

So if you're doing a hard launch and you're redline shifting 1st-4th, that visible and audible delay when you let off the clutch after shifting and give it throttle and it doesn't sound like it "grabs" yet is that what this mod will fix?

It won't fix a slipping clutch but it should definitely help!

^ I just completed the mod, had my girlfriend take the card and go pick me up a dremmel but by the time she got back I already had the clip out. Everything else went real smoothly. I also cut a broom stick and wedged it between the fork and the tire and went through the bleeding process for about 8 cycles until I felt like the clutch was normal. It still hasn't fixed my issue yet though as I've still got a minor lag in between hard redline shifts.

I did this mod about two years ago, and shifting from 1st to 2nd is remarkably better. No more jerky 1st to 2nd shifts.

I rate this mod with the comptech short shift kit. Just for the fun of driving. Don't get me wrong my CAI, rv6 v3 j-pipe, custom j-pipe back Magnaflow resonator and Magnaflow mufflers and tein coilovers are all good too.

Just out of curiosity what trans fluid are you running?

It's pretty much universally accepted that AC Delco 4014 synchromesh friction modified is the best fluid for our car. I change mine every 30k miles, and I haven't had any 3rd gear issues, but I also double clutch on downshifts and match revs on downshifts.

I did this mod about 5 months back and loving it. Still have my old slave cylinder that I kept just in case but I don't plan on switching it back. Might mod it and sell it for half a tank of petrol if anybody is interested.

Are you referring to me?

Can you explain to me how doing routine maintenance will find find problems? Would you you prefer

When I removed my slave cylinder check it was like night and and day. No more jerky shifts to 2nd gear. I'd rate it right up with AC Delco 10-4014 Synchromesh Friction Modified trans fliud.

This is is the fourth time I've changed it in 85k miles

Excuse me, but unless we look for problems. How will we know what to fix?

Let name just a handful of potential problems ie: tie rods, cv joints, ball joints, brakes(rotors and and pad), bushing, motormounts.

I personally like your bury your hand in the sand until all the problems just magically disappear.

I gotta say brilliant analysis.

in a car with a clutch as sensitive as this, seating position and shoes make a difference (thick cushioned soles vs. flat soles).

To be quite honest... I dont know what trans fluid is in there... All i know is i have no 3rd gear crunch n i often times shift like a granny.. i def rev match on downshift... Coming from a non synchro match manual trans is now force of habbit... When i do change though ill be going with penzoil synchromesh

Go with the friction modifier added GM stuff (Delco now)...you won't regret it.

Bringing this up from the dead.

Does anyone have clear pictures of where the slave cylinder is located? I checked multiple pages on multiple threads and couldn't find a clear picture. A DIY walkthrough with pics would be great. I found some that have a DIY on removing the tube in the slave cylinder but not the actual process of removing the slave cylinder from the car.

Thanks!

So from what i have read from threads on this is that if i dont beat on my car i dont need this mod, but i have also read that this can help with smoother shifting all around. I rarely drive my car hard, so should not waste my time or will i still notice the difference with normal driving? Thanks.

It's right on the front of the transmission toward the engine block. You can see it here above the green vin# tag. It's the silver box where the gray hard-line terminates:

ahh, thanks. This helps a lot. Can anyone tell me how many bolts I need to take off to get it out? Also, the hardline, once I take it off, will it start leaking brake fluid?

Thanks,

Thanks,
It's pretty simple to remove. At least they put it in an easy spot unlike for example my legends which are a PIA.
Anyways two bolts and yes the brake fluid is going leak out. You can suck out what is in the reservoir first

This mod is only for those that feel the shifting feels odd...it's not for racecar driving...that would require an actual racecar. I don't regret doing it...recently also did it to my S2000.

Yeah i don't do any racecar driving with my TL. I baby it a lot, but i do find the shifting really odd. I thought it was me, but seems like everyone else does too. I drive my 5 speed chevy prizm smoother than the TL

For you doubters....
before I got my 06 6mt in late February, it had been 13 years since I had a manual shift vehicle.

I could not get the hang of driving the TL smoothly, seemed like I have to give it too much throttle to not stall it on starts, and on full power launch, it slipped the clutch & I smelled the dreaded burning clutch smell. I thought it needed a new clutch or I had lost my shift mojo for good....

Then I read on here about the Slave Cylinder release check valve & the GM syncomesh fluid.
Changed over the fluid and removed the check valve and threw it as far as I could.
Man what a difference!!! You can actually get some feel out of it now instead of just mush. I can shift right again!! I just don't see how you can go wrong doing this mod.
THANK YOU AGAIN ACURZINE!!!

It sounds great! So this mod even helped with normal daily driving and you could tell a difference?? I think i'd go the route of buying a new SC since i have 145k miles on mine.
