passenger mirror - unique problem

I see the mirror travel in all directions when I shift between reverse and drive as it correctly re-locates itself...so far, so good!!....

But from the armrest control it will only move outward.

But the driver-side mirror works perfectly.

Is it the switch that selects which mirror to control?, or is there a control module somewhere that needs to be replaced?

I can't justify taking a 12 YO car to the dealer for this, so any help would be appreciated.

I have this same issue also. Adding to that, every time I move from reverse to drive or park, the mirror moves to the wrong setting so I would have to set it in park and press the memory seat button to readjust it. I am also looking for a solution to this.

Leads me to believe it is a control module, hard to imagine a defective switch could manifest in different ways

Ive never taken them apart, but i assume there are small servos inside the mirror. the contacts inside the servos potentiometer may be dirty and giving false readings.

to disable the reverse mirror, slide the switch to the drivers or passengers side setting and that will at least make things less annoying

You can check the mirror adjusting switch by simply adjusting the left mirror. If the left mirror adjust in all directions then the mirror adjusting switch is ok.

If thats the case then its probably the mirror actuators.

There is not control module they are wired directly from switch to actuator.

The problem is in the mirror itself.

Sometime ago, I replaced the original passenger mirror on my car with a new OEM mirror. The original mirror worked fine, but there was a small issue with the housing due to the previous owner bumping it into something. Instead of tilting down when in reverse, the new mirror would tilt sideways and it would not reset back to the memory setting.

I returned that mirror and got a replacement one. The new mirror worked 100% right out of the box.

Thank-you for posting the schematic, and I will try replacing the actuator, but I'm still confused why the mirror moves in all directions when I shift between drive and reverse if the actuator was shot?

Because the driver mirror works fine I agree that the 4-way button must be OK; but maybe the mirror selector switch could be the problem? Thank-you for clarifying there is no intermediary control module.

^ Arrrg I wish you guys would state the year for the record.

Assuming you have a 03. In that case it does have a MCU Passenger side - power mirror control circuit (drivers position memory system).

99-00 years do not have DPMS.

It could be the DPMS module.

Sorry, forgive me, I'm a newbie to this forum; yes it is 2003; do you know where the MCU/DPMS module is located?

The rectangular box is the fuse box and the square one is the Passenger Multiplex.

I finally got access to a wrecked 2003 TL and got the DPMS out of it.
Put it in my car, and for some reason it didn't work immediately, but after several seconds all was great!!
Thanks so much for helping me!!
For anyone else reading this, getting at the DPMS was a real bitch!!
You may as well buy new cabin air filters if they haven't been changed for a while, you are right there, but deeper.
