Have damn near all hoses and lines finished with AN fittings. Some of them, however, will not be converted such as the heater hoses and power steering return line due to me not giving a shit cause I want to drive this car!

All I have left is installing my 3.25" intake setup, v-band conversion on stock j-pipe, installing the radiator & cooling fan setup and that's it. Everything else is DONE. After this, I'll upload a base tune and fire it off.

Lmao very true! The bike is going for sale first with the cls following shortly behind. I don't want to sell neither but I want more race car funds lol. I'll probably list them high at first so I can enjoy them both for a little while lmao.

Put her on the road today to check things out and make sure everything is 100% before wrapping it all up. Felt very solid. Though I didn't get the revs high (stayed below 3k), the engine feels great. The massive intake kept reminding me how the car must look to everyone and it was getting quite a few stares as I drove without a hood around town. I went ahead and datalogged the first run just to see what the stock tune wasn't giving the engine. FlashPro indicated it would need around 15-30% additional fuel from the stock j35a8 tune between 900-3000 RPM's so I'd say the engine will pretty tough once it's given what it's asking for. Still need to match the flanges up on the exhaust so I can bolt up the j-pipe to the 3" setup and make some final adjustments on the cooling fans and shroud. The AV7 aluminum radiator has had the upper port relocated to the center with -16 AN fittings added to it. The shroud/fan setup is from an S2000 and as you can see is pretty close to the same size as the radiator. I cut some aluminum brackets to mount the shroud to the radiator then I'll rewire the fans with using factory connectors from the AV6 wiring harness for serviceability when needed.

Have a code that can't be cleared for the rocker arm solenoid being stuck on so I'll have to dig into that before tuning can take place. Other than that, things have been going smoothly and the car should be ready by Spring as originally planned.

It's been a while since I (or anyone else) has posted in here so I'll fill in the gap real quick...

So the cars been together now for maybe 3 or 4 weeks now. It's completely legal, road worthy, almost fully tuned but she has no top on. The hood has literally been the only reason why I have only put less than 100 miles on the new motor and most of that is from tuning on a 3 mile stretch of road here at the house. Lmao

So yeah, the hood. I've been patiently waiting for Mr Hickam to finish up his customers boosted CTS and should have me in at the end of this month. It will be well worth the wait so I'm not trippin' on my boy...yet.

Tuning has been fun and exciting. Though the car makes some ridiculous power from around 4400 up, I'm very convinced that the exhaust is holding back this motors potential and have seriously considered finishing out the exhaust system for some NA tuning and dyno fun for shits sake. These j37a4 heads flow gobs of air up top and the 7 liter plenum intake manifold with j37a4 throttle body & 3.5" intake tubing only adds to that fire up top of the rev range! I LOVE THE POWERBAND OF THIS MOTOR! As mentioned though, I'm pretty convinced the motor would really benefit from a better flowing exhaust system. If anyone remembers, I installed the Odyssey 3.5 oem "ungutted" precats on the motor with a factory j-pipe and adapted this to the 3" exhaust Matt welded up for me. I had to use a 2.5" to 3" adapter just be able to mate the two together. If anyone knows, 2.5" won't support anymore than 300hp and that's realllllllly stretching its ability. My plan is to hopefully order some used aftermarket precats and j-pipe for the 09+ TL and install them. Tune it then take it to the dyno. I'm forecasting an easy 325+ and maybe more if I raise the rev limit higher. We will see what the motor asks for once it breath and then decide from there. But even now, it hits 7k pretty fast and pulls hard till then. And the VTEC harmony the pipes produce is a beautiful noise indeed.

Yeah, I want to see a video too.

I have a modified RV6 J-pipe I will sell you very cheap if you feel like finishing the fab work. I decided to go with an OEM J-pipe so I have no use for this now. I have the mating oval flange with a transition to round 3" that I will include. PM or email me if interested.

Took a few shots of the car today. Disregard the damage on the front fender...my wife backed into it a months back. Thought the bugs splattered on the front of the intake was epic, hahaha. Purchased Eric's j-pipe that he posted above so now I just need some PCD's, then some tuning and then it's off for for a dyno.

An act of God?

It will take at LEAST a 28" wide x 44" long x 5.5" high cowl to cover it all. It may seem like 44" is too much but I want a smooth, long rake from the front of the hood so that it doesn't look like its there only to cover something...if anyone gets what I'm saying? I want angled side walls from the stock hood up to the cowl also to give it a little more personality then the typical ones seen. I'll make sure....Hickam will make sure its appropriately styled to its application. Not one that's from a big block Chevelle in the 70's. Lmao

Thanks man.

The best part about choosing a 98 Accord for your project? Cheap replacement parts! Fender is the least of my concerns. Once the hood is done, I have some mad work to do inside the car in getting ALL functionality of the 3g TLS dash swap that was done. Once finished, I'll have to figure out something else to swap out on it....

I was originally going to do a dual exhaust. The oval flange kind of makes the crossover. Then I decided to just do a 3" single, hence the merge to a 3" round. Then I decided to just use a stock J-pipe... but still do a 3" round. I'm almost as bad as Robert with changing directions before the car is even on the road.

My custom 3" exhaust sits nearly right below the firewall and its a flanged pipe that originally connected to the turbo downpipe. Because this j-pipe appears to be much longer than the stock j-pipe (since it eliminates the 3rd cat), I will either be forced to cut my 3" exhaust back -or- shorten this j-pipe considerably which would be even more work. That's a tough decision for me to make....

I really like these! But remember, the heads I'm using have a different bolt pattern than those carry. Love the idea behind the customization though. Was it done with a jig setup? Surely it was so things would remain in their proper place.

Lastly, the only reason we change our mind so much is because the new idea is always better than the last!

Yes, there was a jig. The modified PCDs fit perfect. I couldn't stand the exhaust smell though, so I decided to go with catalysts this time around.

I recommend cutting your existing tube and also adding a resonator. You will get rasp due to the longer primary tubes. I like the Vibrant resonators. They have a nice oval shaped one they call Ultra Quiet. Vibrant Performance ::.

While I'm at it, the part number for the oval gasket is 13175G. The one you have I made myself because the Vibrant one wasn't available at the time.

Yeah, the clean exhaust smell is one advantage from running these cats right now!

Vibrant has a nice selection in resonators but I'm afraid the UQ's may not meet my demands in regards to volume. Wonder how they filter against the 1794's?

The 1794 is smaller, so you will get less attenuation.

Hello Yungone!

I'm Apple Slicer, coming from the DriveAccord and our8thgen forums. I have read through this thread, excited to see someone knowledgeable on the J series.

Relatively recently, Ktuner has cracked the ECU's on the 8th (2008-2012) and 9th (2013-2015) generation K and J engine Accords with some amazing results post tune! A J35z3 engine made 290 HP with some bolt ons according to Ktuner himself, and has posted the dyno graph here:Link

Reading through this thread, I saw that you are using a Z3 block, and may find this information useful, I'm not sure.

A number of us our planning on going FI, and since you have some experience, I was wondering if you could answer some questions we have, so I can share with our forums. Please excuse my ignorance on a lot of these questions, I am not familiar with any other J engine. A lot of us are pretty new to what I would consider "advanced performance builds". Until recently, we have been stuck with only basic bolt ons, I/H/E, pulleys, ect, since swapping parts would hinder performance without a tune to utilize the gains/changes.

You posted a parts list for your engine:

J35z3 short block with 10.0:1 compression
J37a4 70psi capable oil pump
J37a1 high flow water pump
J35y head gaskets
J35z3 cooling spacers
ARP head studs
J37a4 heads and cams (intake/exhaust VTEC)
Pistons, chambers and valves- ceramic coated
Remote filter adapter w/oil thermostat out to cooler

Questions:

Why are you using the J37A4 Top end? Is it better then the stock z3, or is it due to tuning, or other reason?
Are the Oil and Water pumps upgrades compared to what the Z3 has stock? And if so, will they fit properly on our engines?

For our bottom end, will the crankshaft hold up, or do we need a custom forged one?
I know that the connecting rods and pistons are fairly weak, and need replacing by custom ones from someone like Wiseco.

Do you have any advice or tips regarding building up our engines in general?

Thank you for your time. Any answers you can give us would be greatly appreciated!

Alright so...

Believe it or not, I've been making steady (yet slow) progress on the Accord. Let's see if I can remember it all and catch everyone up to date.

So far, I've maybe 550 miles on the new setup. It's been driven back and fourth to work maybe 2-3 days out of each work week. The only real "problem" I've had yet was a slight overheating issue that occurred once while in a drive thru that was because only one of the two fans were hooked up and working. Other than this, it's been awesome. I've completed the tuning process since the last video I made for this thread and I've added maybe 4 total degrees since then and it made HUGE differences on the power. On the low cam, maybe 3.5 degrees more. I've been keeping AFR's from Honda's 12.5:1 up to 13:1 instead due to slight power increases under both factory and current ignition settings. I've yet to follow through with installing Erik's j-pipe or purchasing the PCD's because....well, life. Lol.

I've been really making it a point to get the AC working because Texas heat SUCKS! Of course this means a major PITA due to combining both the Accord and the 3G TLS AC systems components and wiring. All I have left is wiring in the pressure sensor and that's all. Finally! Then it's just a matter of charging the system with refrigerant and moving forward with the exhaust.

Because I'll be taking a vacation and won't be back till the end of June, it will be some time before I'm able to get the things worked out on the exhaust system. But I'll I'm anxious to see what the efforts have turned out to be once it's installed and dyno'd. Then it's right back to the boost!
