Sketch Pad: 2007 Acura RDX

By Todd Lassa
Photography by Mark Stehrenberger
Motor Trend, August 2003

The MDX sport/utility is arguably Acura's biggest critical and sales hit since the original Legend. So why not a smaller, more youth-oriented crossover SUV? Based on Honda's next-generation CR-V platform, the RDX is foreshadowed by the RD-X (adding a hyphen to the names of concepts is a traditional Acura trick) unveiled at the 2002 Detroit auto show. That radical design study would have to be heavily toned down, including such changes as a real dashboard in place of the concept's virtual video game, full-size headlamps, and a more believable roofline with a less-severe angle to the beltline.

Most intriguing in the concept was its powertrain, which could carry into the production model. The RD-X featured a 2.4-liter i-VTEC four (the same engine that makes 200 horsepower in the Accord-based TSX) connected to Honda's Integrated Motor Assist hybrid system and a six-speed manual. In the concept, the IMA powers the rear wheels for a total of 250 horses. The RDX would be the second hybrid Acura, though the first truly targeted as a performance model, following the all-wheel-drive '05 RL replacement, which bows at this fall's Tokyo motor show.

The RD-X concept featured an innovative, flexible interior; some of its layout, flavor, and function should make it into the production version. The RD-X concept's fantasy look also would have to be toned down in order to sell in Japan, where a production version would be badged as a Honda.

After reading about the new JDM Honda Elysion I started to think that the upcoming RDX will likely be based on this platform similar to the way the Pilot & MDX were based on the Odyssey.

With their intentions of swithcing all models to the ACE (advanced compatible engineering) platforms they couldn't introduce the RDX based on the current CRV.

To me it makes sense as the Elysion is smaller than the Ody, most significantly in width (72" vs. 78") and features the simpler Realtime 4WD instead of VTM4.

Lastly it uses the smaller engines (2.4 4cyl and 3.0V6) instead of the 3.5V6 used for the Pilot & Ody.

Keep in mind I'm not saying it will look like the Elysion but I'm guessing it will share a platform with it.

Anyone agree??
Anyone nicknamed Oracle want to provide any more clues?

Interesting, but I believe I heard somewhere... maybe at VTEC.net that it will be based on the Accord platform.

Keep it coming people... I just hope it is indeed a Hybrid type, and runs on non-premium.

The tranny in the RD-X should give you a hint on what may be available on the TSX in the future. Hint Hint
So by future (refering to the TSX) do you mean 2005 as MY06 or 2006 as MY07?

The RD-X will hit the market first before any real changes are added to the TSX.

Hmm - so RD-X comes out as '06 ... no major changes to TSX by then? Does a TSX AWD IMA wagon count as a "change" or a new model?

Thanks for chiming in Justin, but I am going to have to ask for some clarification. So are you saying RDX in early 2005 with the TSX IMA update in late 2005 so they're both 2006 models (like the 2004 TSX and TL debuted)? Or are you talking RDX released in 2005 as a 2006MY and the TSX IMA update coming at least one MY later? Or am I wrong on both accounts?

Dude, Honda won't bring over any wagons until AFTER they're already popular here. Honda isn't one to lead the pack like that. Just look at how long it took them to offer a real minivan, a big SUV, and a truck!

Wagons are off the drawing board dude. It had a heartbeat for a second but the bigwigs decided whats the point of having a wagon go heads on with the RDX. So no wagons in the near future if ever.

So is Acura going to introduce a new MDX next fall too? Or is going to have to wait until calendar 06? Early 07 perhaps?

Any word on RDX pricing?

Is it just me, or is Acura lining up to have a ridiculous amount of new product in the next few years (New Coupe/Roadster, RDX, new MDX, new NSX, AWD TL, IMA AWD TSX, new RL) ?

Hmm ... I guess since everyone else is already doing it and selling well they are too late so they gave up? Too bad for Acura/Honda

Time to obsess over the RDX now ... but not sure that is going to be big enough to be useful nor sporty enough to be fun

I don't have much faith in the RDX but I do like the possibilities of what it brings to the TSX.

Well, the MDX drives like a tall TL, so hopefully the RDX drives like a tall TSX, albeit one with 250hp and AWD. I'd trade the Touareg on one if they get the look right.

That's a good point Prof G. I definetly would only be interested in the RD-X if it was VERY car like in its ride, handling, performance, etc. Hmm ... sounds like a wagon to me

Wagons selling well -- compared to what? I myself don't see many wagons on the road at all. I see at least 20-30 (or maybe more) SUVs for every wagon I see. That should explain why Honda is focusing on the RDX instead of a wagon. I do think as time goes on, that SUVs will fall out of fame and wagons will come back -- but it's far from happening now.

Acura Coupe/Roadster??

I know we're in the RDX thread, but I must have missed something... Where and When did the 'New Coupe/Roadster' rumor start? I've been hoping for a convertible Honda with 4 seats. I have an S2K now which rocks but I need back seats for my expanding family and I really don't want to buy a Mini convertible, Beetle, etc...

IMO, the CL would have sold better as a $32K luxury convertible, in my opinion, and competed very well with Solara, Sebring and other convertibles in that price range.

Any info on how serious this car is and when it might be available?

Thanks !

To me, "new product" is new models, not renewed current models, so I count one.

Will we see the RDX "concept" at the Detroit Auto Show or the NY Auto Show... similiar strategy to what they have done in the past?

I would bet the RDX will be about the same size of the X3/RX330 and the 06 MDX will get a little larger (unfortunately) to separate it from the RDX. I guess the RDX and Pilot will be in the same price range too. So that probably means the Acura will probably have some features to distant itself from the Pilot, like Bluetooth, IMA and clutchless manual trans.

just double checking.. i don't think tsx/tl is on same platform.. is it?

The Accord/TL rides on a stretched global midsize platform, which is the TSX.
