Question for those that road trip using built-in Google. I have this snapshot from a hypothetical possible trip of mine. I like how it tells me the expected charge level when I arrive, and how long I expect to charge. A few questions immediately pop to mind.
It doesn't seem to tell me to what battery level I will be charging to. Just the amount of time to charge. And, of course, this could be very inaccurate if the charger does not provide as much power as expected. Is there a way to find out what charge level I should stop at?
Will the car automatically stop charging at the charge level it thinks it needs for the next leg of the journey? Or will it go all the way to 80% if I don't stop it?
Seems it often wants to get me to the 12-15% range before stopping. I see no way to say "stop for a charge above 20%" for example. Stopping at 13% is past my threshold for anxiety.
How on Earth do they estimate that I will spend 1h 2m charging at Mt. Pleasant? Are they taking me all the way to 100%?
I will say, on the numerous shorter road trips I've done lately (ones that take 70-85% of the battery round trip, I've done 6 of those this year), I have been happy with the battery estimation. In all cases I've ended a trip with slightly more battery left over than originally estimated. Giving me confidence in the trip planner that I will always have enough juice to get somewhere.
I do have A Better Route Planner downloaded onto the car, and I could use that. It has the features that I see lacking above with Google. My problem is, I've always found ABRP to under-estimate the energy I will consume on any given trip. Making me less confident about its planning abilities.
1) As to where the charge will finish, I have to assume where ever you have the setting in the vehicle under the charging functions
2) It will charge to your current setting level.
3) I hit the search function when I'm nearing 20% or so. It shows the charger location ahead and behind my current location. Living in CA, chargers are abundant and along every major highway/freeway. I've been down to as low as 5-6% charge before stopping(ONCE!!!). Now that I know this causes issues with the 12v battery, never again going that low.
4) I assume the ability to do math in the CPU is far beyond my simple abilities in the estimation...
Once you select your charge station, a ">" will show in the upper right corner. Select the ">" and the charger details will be shown(rate, availability, etc.).
The only thing you can tweak with Google Maps is the SoC level on arrival. Check if that setting is what you want, maybe that is why the last stop takes longer than expected. Or you can manually add any charging stops you prefer, I think the system is smart enough to recalculate and fill the gaps.
For #1, I remember somewhere shows the charge level at every stop. Maybe clicking on each stop in the route detail list?
For #3, Gmaps wants you to be in and out as quickly as possible. That is why it aims for 10-20% for each stop, because theoretically, that maximizes the charging rate. I do find Gmaps sometimes does not do battery precondition as early as I prefer to (25-30 minutes).
