Unhappy Sunroof shattered WTF

The sunroof on my 2012 ZDX shattered this morning. I wasn't aware it happened — drove less than a mile to my destination (my mechanic for an oil change, ironically), got out of the car, and startled to see the sunroof glass all broken up (it's tempered glass). Mechanic had never seen anything like it. Looks very much like a compression failure — that the glass got too big and finally buckled from side to side (long up-swollen break) and fractured along the entire edge above each door.

Anyone?

A quick Google shows that shattering sunroofs are a thing — Consumer Reports has three articles on it. Acura (and ZDX) are not specifically mentioned.

Insurance won't cover it since there is no cause of damage. Acura will replace it*, but with no compensation or discount.

*Replacement cost for the glass panel alone is $1,600. Labor will be a few hundred dollars (mostly to make sure all the broken glass is removed). Part is currently back-ordered with no delivery date listed. To me, that means there may not be any part in their inventory, in which case I likely won't see one.

Car is in good shape. 66,000 miles. No issues. Had hoped to get another 5+ years from it, as I like it and it is the perfect combination of hauler/cruiser that I need.

Mostly looking for anyone who has had the same thing happen (or heard about it), but open to suggestions.

Thanks.

Glass can be found there for about 1000. Maybe even cheaper on ebay.com or car-part.com used.

I would go back to your insurance company and have them fully explain why they won't cover it. The glass is shattered - regardless of the reason/cause and needs to be replaced. Driving as is, is unsafe for you and other motorists.
In MA, glass is 100% covered and with no deductible, so maybe it's different but just seems bizarre they would deny coverage.
I had a 94 Accord and developed a crack (read stress fracture) in the sunroof. There was no impact and I brought it to the dealer. I had to bring it back a 2nd time for a regional mgr to see it, but they covered the replacement via the original warranty. I know this doesn't apply in your case, but just another data point.

It of course depends on your insurance coverage, but NBP04TL4ME is correct--under most policies, something like this should be covered. It may be comprehensive rather than collision, you will have to pay your deductible, and they may raise your rates--but it should be covered.

in the winter I notice my glass roof making weird noises when I hit little bumps and sometimes weird cracks but never did my glass crack although with the continued noises I feel like it’s gonna be inevitable. You ever noticed weird noises?

^^^ expansion and contraction of glass, rubber and metal at differing rates. Tolerances may be enough for yours never to actually crack.
