Still Only Charge To 80%

The general statements are that one shouldn't charge the battery to more than 80%, except for the occasional trip where you need as many miles as possible. Does this still apply? I read the charging chapter in the manual and it doesn't say anything about that. It only says not to charge more than 80% when you go downhill extended periods of time, as then the regenerative breaking system will stop working when the battery is full. So is it fine if we charge that 2024 ZDX to 100% at home (level 2 charger) or at work (DC charger)? Note that we usually just drive maybe a dozen miles here and there. We only own the car for a few days so we only plugged it in 2 or 3 times. So far the car has usually been between 80-100%.

It just seems cumbersome that when you you only driver around in the area you charge it to 80% but then when you plan to drive a long distance, you need to change it to 100%.

From what I read, these Li-ion batteries don't like sitting highly-charged for prolonged period of time. However, keep in mind that GM is very conservative about its battery. My guess is that the caution comes from the XL size of Ultium cell, storing higher energy per cell than most others.

Regardless, I feel this topic has become a myth, that you choose whatever you want to believe. The car makers definitely know the answer, but they don't share the details maybe out of fear of liabilities.

Personally, I try not bending too much for the battery. I keep the 80% recommendation in mind, but charge beyond that if I know I am going to use the energy within a day.

In fact, I would say the car drives smoother in the 80+% window. I don't see why you should treat the GM recommendation as a commandment. Best to do some research on your own, and find your own middle ground.

BTW, that downhill note is not an issue even if the battery sits at 100%. The car is sophisticated enough that it will disable regen, and switch to mechanical braking when the battery is full. The regen on Ultium is quite powerful, so yes anyone should try taking advantage of that, but if you don't, it is just an efficiency loss.
