Angry My Z was sucker punched.

I woke up this morning to a scratch about 7" long on the rear door. It appears someone "mistakenly" keyed, knifed or brushed against it with their wheelchair handle. It couldn't have been on purpose.

Anyways. I ran for a quick estranged at a collision shop who said it'll be about $350 to repaint the entire door. I hate paint repairs and I always think it will depreciate the vehicle quickly.

My question is... My deductible for comp is only $50. Should I do a claim and risk my premium going up or pay out of pocket? I know everyone claim comp doesn't raise your rate like collision claims do, but is hate for it to go up for a $350 repair. Btw, I switched to usaa in October. I had State Farm prior to for 12 years without a single claim.

The insurance peice sucks. Sorry to hear that. Somebody might be able to give better advice on that front.

As far as the damage goes is the scratch deep enough for your nail to get stuck in it when you run it across the surface. If it is you'll need a repaint. If it isn't you should be okay to correct the paint.

Also given their quote on the paint it seems low. May want to look around since paint is the one thing that you'll notice starting to have issues a year or two later. Shops that are very through do give a lifetime warranty but the only way to know is to find out where high end dealerships get their work done. Unless you plan on letting go of the car sometime soon.

Comprehensive claims should not affect your premium

I've had a comprehensive claim and a not-at-fault collision claim with State Farm. Neither raised my insurance, and it shouldn't since I was not at fault.

Not true^. In fact, the INS company use a complicated formula to figure out if your rates will go up. It's a combination of many factors such as the amount of loss, time insured, credit rating, etc.

Additionally, ANY claim is considered a claim. Even if you do not collect any money from State Farm, it is still considered a claim. Also, your agent no longer has a "say in the matter." These kinds of decisions are made on a corporate level.

I was keyed on both sides of my car a few years ago and used state farm to pay the $900 it cost.

Comprehensive insurance covered it, $0 deductible, and rates did not go up ever.
