Felt like material underneath driver's side on bottom of the ZDX

Title says it all...I was looking underneath my car the other day and noticed directly under the driver seat area on the bottom of the ZDX is a felt like material that's exposed to the elements, almost like insulation of some kind...I've never seen this on any other car, and I've seen the underside of many other vehicles in my 54 years.

Anyone know the story? Sound\vibration damping? It worries me because it just doesn't feel like it will last long due weather, washing, etc.

Yes, bottom of the car..exposed to elements....if you look for the YT video of the ZDX crash test you can see it.

ok, so i talk with my buddy who have an autoshop, he said the felt material are better to withstand the element then plastic material because they don't stick and then he show me audi and mercedes also use the same material for the car. he said the felt material are more expensive then plastic too. i won't go to the whole discussion but the point is that these actually withstand the element, learn something new everyday

I'm going in for an oil change this morning, so I'll be asking someone at the dealership....probably won't have any sort of intelligent response.

Since I can't edit my previous post....

It's insulation\sound deadening like I thought, confirmed when I dropped it off. It's also in the wheel wells.(tech was very knowledgeable)

Now I need to find out why I got an RDX as a loaner...non tech to boot!
