The wonders of clay bar

Well I had an AcuraZine meet this weekend for the Minnesota crew, sorry no pics of the meet, forgot I had my camera till the end of it.

I desperately needed to clay bar my car, I had tar and some sort of rust looking specs all over the car from road workers filling potholes during the winter season, they don't pack these heaping mounds of tar so there is a lot of loose stuff I can hear hit all over the car.

I'll let the pictures do the talking.
After the wash and pulling her into the garage:

Just going around the car, not a lot is noticeable if you're looking from a distance but once you get up close, you can see the paint is very very dirty.

a close up of the same door of the pic above, you can now really see all the specs of tar, dirt, and little rusty looking spots. Remember, this is after I washed the car.

These spots were all over the trunk lid.

Passengers side, looks pretty clean doesn't it?

Front wheel fender:

Front passengers side door:

The weapon of choice, I always use this kind of clay. Now lets get to work!

This is from a 6"x6" square:

This is the drivers side door, no more tar, or rusty specs. Took me 45-60 min to do the entire door.

Entire drivers side door, and fender done:

Drivers side mirror before:

Driver side mirror after:

Passengers side door after:

Passengers side fender after, don't mind the two rock chips:

All done clay barring and waxing! Once I get my new taillights finished i'll be doing the ATLP muffler and tips.

Mmmmm car looks so clean!

I love clay bar.

Last summer I had my trunk lid repainted (fixed dents), and the bodyshop was horrible. I ran my hand through my paint and it sounded like sandpaper. They got overspray all over my car and clay bar got rid of it like magic.

Did you seal or wax the car afterwards?

if not, I would do that right away as it seals and helps protect your paint from future tar and rust particles.

Claybar definitely does wonders. It's pretty much my magic eraser lol.

I'll be cleaning up the tips today, deciding on just unbolting the mufflers instead of going through the hassle of taking the bumper off. I'll post pics later tonight.
Here's a before anyways.

No I'll be using #0000 steel wool and metal polish. Thank you sir.

Because I hate dropping a big chunk of change down. Very impatient and I'm terrible with saving for car parts lol. Plus I need to replace the front bumper anyways.

Haha....she's lookin soooo goood! Nate check out this stuff I use on my ATLPs. I recently used it on the stock exhaust tip of my IS300.

I'm sure the exhaust has NEVER been cleaned. The whole thing was rusted.

My weapon of choice "Metal Armor Metal Polish." The picture doesn't come close doing it the tip justice. Its suuuuppppaaa shiny!

Meguiar's clay bar = win. I had never done it before, but then clay barred the car a few weeks ago...what a huge difference. Definitely worth the $20 IMO. Follow it up with Meguiar's NXT 2.0 liquid wax, and it looks REALLY good. I am very happy with how it came out. Nice work on yours OP. What wax did you use? Nice exhaust too btw. ATLP ftw...I love mine for sure. This thread makes me realize it's time for a good wash & polish of the exhaust too. Flitz metal polish is what I've used for a while, good stuff.

Yes the clay is Definitely worth $20. I usually only go through 1 bar of the two supplied but my car was that bad I had to use both bars.
For wax I used meguiars gold class wax.

One point I'd like to make about Clay bar is its not the greatest thing to use on road tar for a couple of reasons;

1) Road tar can contain fairly larges pieces of grit and the clay may not be able to absorbe it thus scratching the clear.

2) Tar is a lot easier to remove with Mineral Spirits, Naptha ot cood ole cheap solvent for oil based house paint. Saturate a cloth then wipe on the panel and let the solution do the work the gently wipe off .

Once the tar is removed then by all means clay the car . You will also find it easier.

Thanks for the pointer, I'm still a detaling newb.

Any tips for the tips lol. I was going to use #0000 steel wool on the insides and outsides of the tips along with Meguiars NXT all metal polysh. Is this bad?
I'm looking for OTC products, I don't feel like buying offline and waiting for this to be shipped. If anyone can suggest something better I can simply buy at wal mart let me know. Was thinking Eagle One Never Dull as well but I hear they don't shine very well after using it.

I use NevrDull all the time... no problems. as for the #0000 by all means on the tips BUT use it with a good concentration of soapy water as a lube.

Yeah I have a can of the powder already, couldn't find a paste. What's the process with using the BKF?

Hmm...I really dont know where I got it or if I actually bought it because its an old bottle my mom had in her garage.

I would think maybe autozone or something similar. I seen they had a website and seen a bottle of this on Ebay to for about $20.

The fastest way to get rid of the rust spots is to use clay bar to get rid of the contaminants then polish using PC to get rid of rust. Clay bar can be used to remove rust but it just takes too long!
