Winter Prepping
Winter Prepping
How do you guys prep your car for winter time? I think I'm going to wash my car one more time before it starts dropping to freezing here. What do you guys reccommend for a long term car care over the frost?

I know my friends that have nice cars they fix up only drive them in the spring / summer/ fall and drive a beater car in the winter. I'm sure people here drive it year round and haven't found any problems?
I gave it a thorough cleaning and put 2 coats of NXT wax on my car (There's a rumor you can layer it, but if I'm wrong oh well). Other than that I would suggest that you make sure that the car stays clean if your going to drive it in the winter. Here in NY they use alot of salt when it snows and if that stays on the car it eats at the paint.

or the sunshine state. winter here= some frost on the car that goes away by eight in the morning. salt or snow nowhere in site. winters in florida keep the car much better than summer when the sun and bugs make it quite difficult.
I usually do this:
Clay Bar
Porter Cable Polish and Wax
Since Texas has some mild winters, I usually can hand wash it 1-2x a month during the winter. Plus, I do not get that much salting here either.

does frost erode wax job? seems no worse than the rain that falls, just use a detail spray if any doesn't bead off or evaporate. with no salt, snow or other elements besides some frost florida is good for the winter. glad to see that intense sun won't be eating away my pinnacle carnauba.

too bad we don't got that "magic tunnel" thing here
Getting back to the earlier question, cars are made to be driven, unless you are babying a 35 year old classic. I keep my vehicles 10 years plus. I had a 1991 Honda Accord that I gave to a friend when I got the TSX a year back. It is going strong with 400,000km (250,000miles)...never rustproofed...a little surface rust around one of the fenders and the top of the windshield but keep this covered with Tremclad. My daughter now drives my 92 Integra with 360,000kms and this car was always driven through the winters. It also has a little surface rust around the windshield, never was rust proofed or oil sprayed.
I wash my cars at least weekly and wax 2 or 3 times per year.
I have 4 snows for the TSX and last winter took it up North several times and drive it daily on the commute to work.

I'm sure our Canadian friends saw some good snow for their TSX. I'll just try to keep driving to a minimum, it's not like they really salt the roads down at campus anyway.. I've seen way to many people slip crossing the street.
I thought the salt from all the saltwater around Florida gets into the air and can eat at your car as well. Maybe only if you are lucky enough to live on the beach?
I know that aircraft aluminum gets eaten alive down there....of course, cars are made of tougher stuff.

I'm sorry, I wouldn't be able to pack up my car in the winter
just make sure you give it a good wax . . . in fact

this guy seems to know what he's talking about
make sure you wash it down on salty days and cross your fingers it doesn't snow much

I wax my car twice a year with zaino. Once before the summer to protect against the sun and then before winter to protect against salt. I haven't gotten to it, but I'm planning to use a clay bar on my car for the first time and then waxing it twice. That should help until next spring.
