I use steel wool on all of the metal hosing. I use Armoral wipes on all of the rubber and black plastic. Simple green gets rid of alot of crap too!

I wet it down first with a damp rag, then I use some simple green automotive cleaner.

Yeah, Black Magic on the engine cover hoses, whatever. The Black Magic I use is in the spray bottle. Never seen the gel...

Step1. is to cover any part in the engine bay that is exposed, i.e. exposed air intake, distributor cap, battery, ignition coil, and sensors.
Step2. when everything is covered, use a spray degreaser, (such as gunk brand), spray the degreaser in the engine bay liberally. let soak for 10-15 minutes. After around 5 minutes you can scrub any hard grime off, with a bristled brush.
Step3. after letting the degreaser dry for its recommended time, hose it down thoroughly and make sure you get all of the degreaser and grime hosed off.
Step4. let the water dry, it is important not to start the car up until the engine bay is completely dry. some may use a leaf blower to speed up this step.
Step5. now your engine bay is clean of filth. using a water based dressing, on rubber parts will make it look richer in color. it is vital that you use water based dressings because a silicon based dressing will deteriorate and can cause sensors to fail if sucked into the air filter.
Step6. the engine bay also has paint, using a good wax here can really set off the appearance of the "bay". don't use your best wax, just something that gets the job done.
Step7. the engine bay also has soe metal in it. using a nice metal polish on a nice rag will do, just rub it in and then buff out.

Black Magic is water based, Armor All and such are not and will turn your hoses brown after time.
