UDM (Ultimate Detailing Machine)

Im currently seeking input from Acuraziners regarding the above machine. Specifically, interest!!
Im trying to determine how many to preorder, and as one can imagine, too many on the shelves kills overhead.

So if after reading this transcript, you are very interested in this machine, please leave your username: example
(1. exceldetail)
And if anyone needs more specific information, I have about 20 hrs worth of detailing with this machine thus far, I'd be happy to answer any questions you may have.
Here is some info, as stated from the UDM's originator.

"Well, it appears that I can't keep a secret under wraps for very long. So, here's the story, (and I'm sticking to it!).

Background
The Porter Cable 7424 Orbital Polisher/Sander has been the defacto-standard polishing machine for the better part of 10 years. It's a nice machine, but it has some limitations:

1. The motor is not strong enough
2. The machine vibrates too much
3. The machine has several weaknesses (switch, armature brushes, cord)
4. The warranty is basic 1-year "return to factory - parts and labor"
5. The machine does not come with a flexible backing plate
6. The machine is whored out in the retail channel

"About six months ago I went on a mission to duplicate the functionality and form factor of the Porter Cable 7424 while removing all of the limitations I listed above.

Ultimate Detailing Macine(TM)
The new machine will be called the Ultimate Detailing Machine and will be supported and sold through
www.ultimatedetailingmachine.com. It will feature:

1. 4.2 AMP, 500 Watt motor (20% more power than the Porter Cable 7424 3.7 AMP motor)
2. Very high quality concentric offset, full floating head that is well balanced
3. Variable speed from 2,000 to 6,000 OPM
4. Side handle
5. Heavy duty power cord, switch and speed control
6. Two color canvas bag
7. Full color 24 page manual
8. Wrench
9. 1 year replacement warranty

Parts are manufactured for us in China and Mexico. Final assembly and testing will be at the ARC of San Diego facility, where we will employ a number of adults with learning disabilities full-time on this product line (production and refurbishing).

Capabilities
To say that this is simply a "clone" of the Porter Cable would not give credit to the many improvements and the significantly improved capabilities. In short, this machine offers 90% of the polishing capabilities of a good rotary without the potential hazards. As an example, we are able to pull out clear coat scratches that the Porter Cable 7424 was not able to remove.

The combination of the more powerful motor and the vastly improved head unit allow this machine to work polishes harder than any other electric orbital on the market, yet the machine is smooth enough to operate with one hand at full speed (please not that the machine does vibrate, but our prototype machines vibrated less than the two Porter Cable 7424 polishers we used in side-by-side testing).

Sales Channel
The Ultimate Detailing Machine will be available through reseller channels and through the
ultimatedetailingmachine.com web site. The list price on the Model 1000 kit (as described above) will be $149.95. This list price will allow us to put the product into the reseller channel and manage very high quality and superior service.

Availability
We have stepped up production to have this product into the reseller channel in limited quantity by mid-June (USA and CA only) and in full scale production by the end of June.

Distribution to the UK market will be in July. ROW markets are to be determined later this year.

Markets
Initially we will produce a North American version (120v/60Hz w/ CSA safety mark) and a UK version (220-240v/50Hz with CE safety mark). We stepped up production to have this product into the reseller channel in limited quantity before the end of June and in full scale production by the end of July. We are having the device certified for all markets we enter.

Accessories
The Ultimate Detailing Machine brand will offer a full range of backing plates, polishing pads, bonnets, brushes and other devices to clean, polish and wax vehicles. We will innovate new products that offer more utility from the Ultimate Detailing Machine.

Safety Certifications
CSA, CE, GS, RoHS

On the website it says mid June to end of June for full production for NA.
I would be interested. It's a good thing I never got the PC yet.

Common business practices as labour rates and overhead expenses are less expensive in these countries.

A worthy cause IMO as it provides employment for people who because of their disabilities find most employers unwilling to give them jobs

True - Whether or not you agree with it shouldn't be discussed in *this* thread.

I am interested but wont know if I have the funds to commit when it comes out (debating whether to save money for shocks or getting PC/UDM). I'll keep an eye on this thread though

If not *this* thread then where?

Did someone cancel free speech in America or perhaps you can no longer voice an opinion on this forum????????

I think someone took that a little to close to heart. Perhaps we'd like to turn this thread political and discuss the pro/cons of using outsource labor and imported materials.

I'd much prefer to keep it informative and about this product. Don't take my comments personally, I was addressing TSX420J's comment, it wasn't even addressed toward you.

If someone wishes to discuss anything "other" then the UDM, please feel free to initiate a thread. As for now, the author (me), would like to maintain discussion as it pertains to the Ultimate Detailing Machine.....

Pat - you said this thing doesn't know the meaning of "bogged down". Will this make Random Orbit closer to the effectiveness of straight rotary with out the risk?

Exceldetail- please accept my apologies for deviating from the main subject of discussion in this thread.

I just got very irritated (not cool and very usual for me) but when someone starts off with “WTF” and then goes on to make light of a worthy cause… enough said

If it can provide a 'safe' alternative to a rotary with 80% of its polishing abilities it would be a worthwhile tool to own. I'll wait until I see a side-by-side review and / or do one myself when its available here (UK)

Its about as close to a Rotary as you can get, without the fears of using a rotary.......

Does it use the same DA pads that we use with the Porter Cable? I'd be interested if I can sell my PC with backing plate to subsidise the cost.

If they come out here by the end of the month I'm in for one. I've been itching to have a go at my TSX.

I'd also like to know if the production model will have fixed the issues that pat brought up in the other thread. I believe the on/off switch.

I'm in for one. However I also need other supplies. All I have is tire cleaning supplies and 303.

I noticed your out of most of your sheepskin mitts, everything else I need to order you have in stock. Hopefully you'll have some heavy/very heavy mitt's in when this comes in, so I can save on S/H costs.
