autogeek. they will have how to videos and in depth info on the various products.

dummie proof DA polisher= porter cable 7424 xp

popular products: meg's 105/205 combo (for swirl removal), mezerna, optimum...lots of others.

sealant and waxes...depends on what you want. popular products: collinite 845, black fire, opticoat

everyone has their own favorites. i certainly have mine and pleased with the results i've gotten not only on my cars but a few friends cars i have worked on. stupid shiny and durable and leaves a nice slick finish that lasts until the next detail session months later.

you'll be wowed after the clay bar process, once you machine polish the swirls...you'll be be like HOLY CRAP! it can certainly become addicting and you may end up becoming really anal about keeping your car looking clean and freshly detailed all the time. you have been warned.

a bit off topic, your mods say that you have installed a black overlay on roof.
you had it done or did it your self ? on ebay, they are selling glossy black shields for 25-35$. is it worth it?

Guys,
i have decided to get this PC DA buffer and 100 feet extension cord, which i will get this weekend from home depot. I am planning to take action this saturday and have ordered a few more products. Now i have following.

1) Meguiar's Ultimate Polish - 16 oz.
2) Meguiar's Ultimate Compound
3) Meguiar's Mirror Glaze 20 Polymer Sealant, 16 Ounce Bottle
4) Mothers 07240 California Gold Clay Bar System
5) Mothers 05664 California Gold Car Wash - 64 oz
6) Nu Finish Liquid Car Polish
7) Mothers 05750 California Gold Pure Brazilian Carnauba Wax Liquid - 16 oz

What i am planning following sequence after wash and clay

1 - Ultimate polish,
2 - ultimate compound,
3 - Mirror glaze 20 sealant,
4- Nu finish polish,
5- Wax

I am not planning to get more products lol, what ever i do this time, should be done using above products. I am hunting for right pads, Any advice on pads which i can get from home depot \ Lowes ? and will i saperate pad for each product?
(I know, I am being lazy )
thanks

he should just omit the nu finish.

do this:
ultimate compound
ultimate polish
glaze (if desired)
sealant
wax

he may not even need the ultimate polish since UC actually finishes off really well considering it's a coompound. depending on the pads he uses.

thanks for the input. i will put compound before the polish and drop Nu finish polish.
Now back to pads and application. autogeek says 6 times overlapping pattern for each application and used different pad for each chemical (the video which i saw) any thing i need to know in addition to this?

Yellow pad for the compound on the bigger issues.

Orange pad for the Compound over all if you think its needed.

Orange pad for the polish overall ..

Wipe down with 50/50 mix of IPA & water to clean the surface of polishing oils.

Sealant .

Wax is redundant as it does the same job as the sealant. Not only that the carriers in the liquid wax may remove some of the sealant. But if you do go this way .. wait at least 12 to 24 hours before applying the wax .. gives the sealant time to cure.

I am out of time to order online since i want to do it this weekend. i will have to see my available (cheap) options from walmart, advance auto , pepboys, home depot etc...

3M isn't that common a pad .. most are Lake Country pads , here is a reference guide.

http://www.lakecountrymfg.com/applicationguide/chart/

As stated before , you should have ordered the pads when you ordered the Porter Cable 7424XP ... 99% chance your not going to find the correct ones locally. If you go for "cheap" options you will be back here Monday looking for advice on how to fix what you made.

Sorry.

so, i was reading about yellow pad. Its an agressive buffer, Orange has moderate cutting power and there are three other pads: white, black and blue. all three almost sound the same as they are for finishing.
I assume, Yellow pad only for areas where i need more cutting power than orange pad right?
so it will be like, I start my compound application with Orange and see results. use yellow with compound again, if needed. use polish with orange again and probably buff the final layer of wax, using one of those soft flat pads? i am thinking about choosing black pad for that step. what you think?

Orange pads x2
yellow pad x1
black pad x1
this backing plate - click here or i really dont need it since i will be getting lake country as you suggested.

In the same note, how good these pads last, if used properly (like not using them on any sharp area) say, i will be using orange one more than others, so one orange pad will last me for five car details?

there are different colored pads from different companies that are completely different so just saying the color isnt gonna specify anything.

personally, i have one of each heavy cut pad, med cut pad, light cut, finishing pad.

ideally, youll want to use the least agressive pad and least agressive compound possible to get the results you want.
i usually tape off about a 12x12 area and start with the lightest i have of both. if that doesnt do the trick, move up to a stronger pad and compound til it does the trick. then work my way down. if i use a heavy cut pad and heavy cut compound then i come back and do another run with a light cut pad and light compound and then polish til i get the results i want.

you will need a backing plate. the backing plate attaches to the buffer, the pads attach to the backing plate via velco.

as long as you take good care of them, they should last a decent amount of time.

i wash mine as soon as im done with them.
you can buy pad cleaners but ive never tried them.
i just soak them in water with a little dish washing detergant in them for a little while and them run them in the washer with my MF towls and other pads when im done cleaning my car.
comes out looking new every time.

thanks for the input. I see Lake country pads are cheaper and have good reviews. I wont mind paying a few bucks more on pads which get the job done in better fashion. Any brand \ kind preference ?
