nah you dont. you can put the new wax over the old layer. it doesnt matter, unless you want to 'bare bone' it, and start from the bottom.

Hey katana,
What steps should I take before polishing, then waxing my car if I wax once every 10-14 days?
I bascially clay every 6 months
polish ever 2-3 months
wax every 10-14 days
wash every 5-7 days
I am about due for a polish again, I was wondering what the best way is to prep the car for polishing? Do I need to strip old wax off? If so, how?
Thanks for your help, I wanted some insight from a non-zaino nazi.
Just Kidding guys, I'm sure Zaino is great, just really happy what what I'm using now.
Thanks!

B

That is just so way overboard! IMHO
If you use Zaino you don't need much keep up.
If you want to strip wax use Dawn dish soap. You do not need to do it if you already have stuff on your car. If your switching to another product, then yes, staying with the same no.

It definately is more than I need, I'm sure. But I kinda like polishing and waxing the car. Plus, here in MN, it's a little more difficult to keep good looking paint on a black car.
Is there anything other than Dawn that will strip the wax?

I dont think you're going overboard, i think you're a guy who's dedicated to keeping his car looking the best it possibly can.

For your car...

I'd definently do a clay first. No need to use Dawn, keep that in the kitchen.
If you feel comfortable using a rotary buffer, pick up some Meguiar's M-3, which is a light compound/polish, which can also help remove swirls.
Follow that by polishing with a mirror glaze/ sealent.
I usually do a double coat of wax, I use a polymer for protection, and then top with a light carnauba for shine. Keep in mind, carnauba does not last long, so its a good thing you wax so often.

If for any reason you dont feel comfortable taking the task of buffing your black car, take it to a good professional detailer. After that, just upkeep. A good detail should run you in the $100-120 range. As for finding a good detailer, dont be sold on sales pitches or brochures. Look at the work they've done, or by word of mouth.

any other questions feel free to ask.

Three more
1) do I have to clay before every polish? If not, how do I prep it?
2)I have Meg's scratch X, I love what it has done so far, how is M-3 different? Lighter compound?
3)I use Megs NXT wax, which is a polymer if I'm not mistaken, would putting more than one coat of that on at one time do me any good, or just a wast of product?
Sorry for the Noob Q's, but hey, since you are offering your services!
Thanks,
B

you do not have to clay before every polish. claying is only done when you can feel the imperfections on the surface. I've never used Scratch X, so i cant tell you the difference, and i also dont know too much about the the NXT yet, since iv'e never used it, so maybe the Meguiar's site/ reps can help you out more in that regard.
