For a beginner, I wouldn't recommend a rotary at all. I'd recommend a dual-action, such as the Porter Cable 7424XP.

Porter Cable 7424XP is going to be the best bet. Here are 2 great starter kits:

http://www.detailedimage.com/wax.php...P-65-Kit-P333/

and

http://www.detailedimage.com/wax.php...asic-Kit-P335/

or you can buy the buffer by itself for 129 and let him buy his own pads and whatnot.

I'll be the next to continue the echo in here. A rotary is not for beginners....period.

I got my Makita for Christmas and did some practice runs with it. So far, so good. After several jobs with it, I was sold but just a few weeks ago, I burned my own car with it. You can see the damage it caused in this thread. Start with the random orbital and then once you've got all that down, then you can think about graduating to the rotary.

what size pads do you guys recommend - ive heard the backing plate that comes with the porter cable is the best to use instead of getting the 6.5 backing plate and pads.. also where can i get the best deal on this?

what polishes/solutions do you guys recommend?

Orange, white, blue and red........The BP that comes with the PC is adequate for 5.5" pads, which are the most popular and efficient. I wouldnt hesitate to go with Optimum Hyper Polish Spray.....

i read that the porter cable does not come with a backing plate and you need to buy one seperately..

Different resellers offer different packages. Some of those packages are good, some not so good?
As I indicated earlier to you, the one I ship comes equipped with a 5" BP.

Any PCXP kit, for the most part, would be your best option for you. I hope your brother won't mind sitting hours at a time buffing his car, LoL.

Try Griot's Garage 6 inch, it carries a lifetime warranty (very nice to have).

I have the PC 7424XP with a 5" backing plate & Lake County 5.5" orange pad for initial cut & a white pad for the final cut. I also have a black finishing pad as well. The Optimum line is a great product & a pretty good value as well. Many of the detailing companies have pre-assembled kits for around $200 - $250. The Groits polisher & their polish is another option.
