This question depends on if you choose to use a carnuba or a synthetic wax. And also where you live, as different climates affect waxes differently. If you choose to go the carnuba route then I would say wax at least once a month. Carnuba is a very soft based wax and durability is not one of its strongest points. However, if you choose a synthetic, depending on which one you can expect protection anywhere from 2 months to six months.
For great info on wax there is an independent wax survey called "Guru Reports Wax Tests." They can be found in the back of most car magazines or by doing a quick search online. There you will find the answers to all your questions about shine, depth, durability and overall appearance. They cover everything from Zanio to Turtle Wax. It is money well spent if you are anal about detailing.
