how long does factory clearcoat last?

Hey all--great forum.

Just picked up a NHB 06 TSX two weeks ago. Dealer said that they put a clear coat on it before delivery. At any rate, was pretty messy around here in Milwaukee so I quickly ran it throug a touchless wash... yeah, I know... Anyway, it seems as if all the waxy clearcoat is gone--feels a bit squeaky to the touch.

To my question: Is this a good time to go through some of the protection techniques I've read about on this and other forums? (ie applying a polymer (polish) and/or carnauba?) Or should I still try and strip the remaining clearcoat off?

You've all got a lot more knowledge/experience than myself so any info is greatly appreciated as I want to keep this paint in the best condition possible.

cheers,
Nate

I think you are mixing up CLEARCOAT and WAX

The factory clearcoat should NEVER come of...but I would wax ASAP to protect your paint

First of all, I have no idea what the dealer put on your car. Clearcoat is a clear (non-pigmented) top coat paint that is applied over a colored base coat paint. If I was to guess, it was proabably a paint protection package consisting of some type of sealant/wax product. And to answer your question, yes, definetly apply a sealant (polymer) or a wax (carnuba) to protect your finish. Here's an informative thread by some members who were in somewhat the same situation you're in as well as other links to similar scenarios. And if you have any questions, just post it or send a PM. There's a bunch of folks here who will gladly help you out.

My dad never waxes or seals. He trades for a new car when the finish is gone, and I think he waits about two years too long on the trade.

He laughs at my clean cars. Detail I just did, looks better than the day purchased (this is not hard to do)...
