Try not to use the foaming brush on those car washes on the body of the car, they have everybody else's dirt and grime on them and you will be scrubbing your car with it. Bring your own wash mitt, (lamb's wool or microfiber is good) to be used for the UPPER part of the car.
For the LOWER part of the car (below the lower half of the door) is the dirtiest part of the car, so you can use older wash mitts on it.
If you use car wash concentrates with carnauba in them, they usually leave a decent shine. Most modern waxes are easy on- easy off. I heard NXT gives a pretty decent shine (although a bit pricey). If you use "wax", you're looking at re-applying it every 2 weeks or so just to keep up the shine and protection. A multi-step product or a sealant/ wax combination will give you better results and longer protection that may last for a few months. Just browsing the articles on the Wash and Wax will give you ideas of how other members clean/ wash/ wax /protect their finish from the simplest to the most complex.
Congrats on the new car, I hope you have many, many moons of fun and safe travelling with it.

I would recommend finding some Megs # 20. Its a Polymer Protectant with cleaners in it. 2 in 1. NXt is the same with cleaners, but to a lesser degree.Or go with Mothers new FX polymer sealant.

I agree with Vicman, NXT will do a decent job, and offers pretty good protection. I wouldn't go with anything more than NXT until you have a chance to do a really good full-on by-hand type of a detail.

Once you pick up on the habit, you WILL end up with shelves of products that you have tried but will always end up using the one that you like.
Just don't throw away the old "cleaner "waxes. They are good for the inner door jambs and inner edges of the trunk, doors and hood.
