Hall of Shame

So what are some of the absolute worst car interiors you've ever seen or detailed? As I work for a dealer now and have in the past, I am continually astonished by how some people treat their cars costing tens of thousands of dollars. Here is just a sampling of the crimes being committed although I look forward to seeing others. Most of the really bad ones are minivans but that's almost expected.

The entire interior of this Odyssey was covered in this same sticky brown film.

You thought that was bad? Check this out!

And trust me, it smelled about as bad as it looks.

Finally....the piece du resistance:

Those stains look like cola or Dr. Pepper, trust me I had a fun time cleaning them when I did the following car:

I had to do a car's interior that was MUCH worse than that. It was a ford ranger owned buy a HS teenager. The interior was HORRID, I mean to the point where I gagged when I opened the door and almost refused my buddy to clean it up.

This truck had everything you could imagine in the back seat/storage area, he had a total of 8 rotting half eaten wendy's burgers (half wrapped in the package, a few of which had HEAVY mold on them) a few empty soda bottles or bottles that had emptied themselves in the carpeting, soda cups from wendy's, socks, dirty beach clothing with sand, coins, general trash, a few hunting knifes (one almost got me) and fishing equipment that STUNK like rotting fish and to top it off, fresh gym clothes. I had to empty my vac and wash it out half way through since the smell wasn't being filtered out much by the vac and was getting everywhere around me.

One of the worst items were the cupholders. He must have had a cola leak in both of them or spill and there was a solid 1/2 inch of sticky gooey residue. And to top it off there was change and other garbage stuffed into the goo so it wouldn't get on his cups!

Needless to say I wore gloves and emptied out 2 50 gallon trash bags of junk. All said in done, I had 1 large plastic bin filled with random items that I'd thought he'd wanted such as an anatomy text book, cleats, misc. clothing, 2 ipods, his kifes (wrapped in paper towels and rubber-banded), a zip-lock full of change, a stetson hat, etc.

I probably used a few magic erasers, almost a whole bottle of APC, a whole bottle of Woolite solution, and my shopvac and misc brushes all a beating. I'll get a photo or two when I can find them!

So are the people that drive this vehicle "trashy"? I just don't understand how people can let their vehicles get half that bad. Yeah I know they may have kids or whatever but that is no excuse. Its seems simple to me, whenever you leave the vehicle, take the trash with you. That shit is crazy how someone can plop down 20-30K on a vehicle and treat it like a garbage can. Another question, do you charge them a little bit more than the other vehicles you treat? I sure as hell know I would.

It depends. Some detailing shops have a fixed price advertised on their website / newspapers and it doesn't matter how dirty the cars are, they'll either charge that price or be a douche and refuse to honor it and ask for more.
Other shops / independent detailers ask customers to bring the cars in to make a walk thru before giving a quote.

i still don't understand how some people can use their cars as a rubbish bin and drive around in all that trash... at some point, it has to be hazardous to your health...

I am of the mindset that if you come in to buy a new car, the dealer inspects the condition of your old one and makes the interior of the new one look identical to it. You know....to save you the trouble of having to fuck it up.

I have some more photos of nasty cars here but just to clarify, these cars are just in for service, not for detailing. And the amazing this is, the owners of the worst of these cars are always the ones that complain we didn't clean it well enough.

So sit back, pull out your barf bags and get ready for round two...

I got called out by a repair shop to give an interior detail estimate. It was a PT Cruiser that was repo'ed and the bank wanted it cleaned up inside. The guy at the shop warned me not to commit to a price until I saw it. I pull up and they said it was around back. Even closed up, the stench was pretty bad. They owner of the shop said his mechanics refused to get into it unless it was cleaned up. Turns out a couple of crack heads and their infant had been living in the PT for more than a month. Imagine the dirtiest and smelliest interior you've seen, then turn the volume up to 11.

My usual photohost is down, I'll post up pics whenever it comes back up.

NASTY!!!! I dont think i could EVER get my car as nasty as those, EVER!!! Im sure its always the people with NASTIEST cars that complain the most about their car not being "cleaned enough"!

One question, with all there crap in there, do you just toss out moss of the stuff? I mean, i would assume so since im sure they will never find it in with all that junk. Have you ever had any complaints about tossing out something important?

A couple of those interior shots look like there was a child to blame. Although ultimate responsibility lies in the hands of the adult driver, a kid can quickly distroy a car. And a kid with a kid is even worse...

I quoted $800 minimum, only real choice was to pull the whole interior and power wash it and I told them I wouldn't guarantee it would come out that good-Chrysler uses some pretty cheap carpet and seat fabric in those PT's. I also told them what they really should do is find a totaled PT and get that interior. Bank decided to send it to auction as is.

The bank probably would have recovered the cost of the interior detail plus some if they would have only let you do your thing.

Barf, it's amazing the condition of some interiors.

I learned my lesson, one of my in laws neighbors wanted a detail inside and out a few years back for $50 bucks. I decided eh, how bad can an Odyssey be?

When I opened the doors I was reminded they had children and no cleaning habbits.........I sort of half assed it and they were still amazed so win win. lol

Me on the other hand, dash/center console/cluster/driver's door panel gets dusted off every time I park for the night. Also I bought the car late August and the dealer plastic is still on the driver's floor mat. LOL

If you treat the inside like that and won't even clean out the garbage before going into service, why bother with the service at all?
