Surface prep is highly recommended prior to applying a coat of wax/sealant especially if it's been neglected for a period of time. Usually claying to remove imbedded contaminants and polishing to remove surface defects (swirls, minor scratches & restores lustre). The difference is quite noticeable compared to slapping on a coat of wax.

So does that mean I have to start over or is it too late?

Just wash, clay and apply wax. it's simple. I would do a very light polish by hand using SSR1 after claying just in case I caused any marring with the claybar though.

It's Poorboy's brand SSR1. It's a very light swirl remover. Ideally it should be applied by machine but I also do it by hand (the bottle also says that it can be applied by hand).

There is no need to "Start over" per say. Just wash, clay, light swirl remover and then nanowax. You don't have to do it now either. You can do it the next time your car needs to be waxed.
