Engine Cleaning, How to ?

How does one go about cleaning their whole engine ?(i.e. what to use, how to do it, without F-ing something electrical up)
I have asked this question to many people and have not gotten a clear detailed answer.
Any suggestions anyone????

ok, heres what u do....
1. pop the hood
2. leave the car running
3. cover the distributor and spark plugs
4. spray a engine cleaner/degreaser over the engine parts
5. stream with water
6. do not flood the engine with water...while doing this, less is better...
7. if by any chance possible, use a high pressure air hose to get water out of hard to dry engine parts
8. keep engine running a minimum of 15 min.
9. if you want, spray a vinyl conditioner over plastic parts to give them that "treated look"
and that should do it

I've used green stuff (foam version) and it works well

or you can pay a little a get it steamed cleaned....It'll look and smell like it just came off the line. I did this on my camaro after 100k and it came out perfect.
