I am concerned about how to clean the engine compartment. i have heard some products are too caustic and can damage paint, rubbber, plastic etc.
Can I get some advise on getting The Baby clean?

wrap the battery and alternator in foil as well as any electrical or fuse box's so they dont get wet. lightly rinse the whole engine bay, spray it with your choice of cleaner/degreaser then agitate all the surfaces with a brush, rinse, open a beer.
