Compounding and Polishing

I've been trying to get rid of some scratches on my rear bumper but can't get rid of the haze left by the sandpaper. I compounded and polished those areas a bunch of time but it's less noticeable now but still can't get rid of that haze.

Should I keep compounding and polishing it or did I mess up enough that I have to pick another solution? I will post pics later if it gives you guys a better idea. Thanks.

what grade of sandpaper did you use?
Too course you will need to do a couple passes with progressively finer grades til you get down to say 2500-3000 then do the polishing.

The one I used wasn't specified so I kept the sanding at minimal while constantly wetting the paper and the area. But yea I'm gonna grab some 3M 3000 grit sand paper which should work a lot better.

I use Meguiars Ultimate Compound, or should I get a specific scratch remover?

Ultimate compound is highly abrasive. It's not a finishing polish. That's why you still have the haze. You could try some 205 finishing compound but you really need a porter cable. Once you start introducing sandpaper to clearcoat, no amount of work by hand is going to show positive results. And you really should be aware of what grit you're using. You might want to try posting up some pics so the pros here can look at it.

I will post pics later when I get the chance, I have a buffer as well which was what I have been using. I was thinking of picking this up after seeing a couple reviews on it:

Amazon.com: 3M Scratch Removal System: Automotive Amazon.com: 3M Scratch Removal System: Automotive

Ok lets back up a bit .. what buffer/pads do you have? That's system on a drill isn't going to do a lot.

I have Simoniz 10 inch orbital buffer, I have the foam pads. I bought the 3M scratch and scuff removal kit yesterday and fixed everything up, the 3000 grit sandpaper that came with it was definitely the difference.

If this is what you have --> https://www.simonizdetaildirect.com/...rdless_Buffer/

then that thing is worthless... not enough power to remove the scratches.

You want something like a Porter Cable 7424XP, Griots Garage random orbital, Flex XC 3401, Rupes LHR 15ES, etc with a yellow or orange cutting pad.

If you don't want to invest in those, then the Meguiar's DA Power System would be a good option.

It's less than $50 at Walmart --> http://www.walmart.com/ip/22083702?w...299916&veh=sem

The 3M Scratch Removal System that you listed should work too.

This is the one I have:

It's decent, the only thing that sucks about it is that it only has one speed, but I got it on sale so can't really complain.

Yea the 3M Scratch Removal System did the job, probably gonna buff it out with some more polish just to touch everything up.

Even the DA power System is just good for minor spot correction. Drills don't have the power.

If you used course sand paper and then tried to polish it with compound you end up with shinny scratches. Always start with the least agressive method and if it doesnt work then go to the next most agressive.

Agreed

I just invested in a Griots RO polisher - have yet to use it though - reviews compared to PC is better for scratch removal
Paired it with Chemical Guy's pads - Griots are shite
Definitely an investment but one I don't regret

Good luck with your scratch removal OP
